If you’ve been told, or just suspect, that your child may need braces, you’re probably wondering about how orthodontic treatment is going to impact your family and (let’s face it) your wallet.
We asked our sponsors at Smiles Orthodontics to give us some tips. Here are 9 things you can do to make the experience easier on everyone, plus some things to keep in mind when you’re choosing your provider.
Know What To Expect
Take the mystery out of braces! Make sure your provider gives you a detailed plan and timeline upfront and includes your child in the conversation.
Find A Provider With A Flexible Schedule
It’s actually a myth that kids have to come in for a monthly tightening. At Smiles appointments are scheduled eight weeks apart. They also have lots of before and after school times. Sorry, kids, but you don’t have to miss a bunch of school.
My son has had minimal discomfort with his braces, but we do find it helps if he takes an over-the-counter pain reliever, like Tylenol, before appointments.
Check Out YouTube
Believe it or not, YouTube is full of videos showing kids how to keep their teeth clean while they’re in braces and much more. My tween is more receptive to hearing this stuff from a fellow kid-even if it’s one he’s never met. Go figure.
Keep ‘Em Clean
It’s super important to keep teeth clean while they’re in braces. Dr.Larson has several helpful videos for kids. We have also found a Waterpik to be a helpful tool.
Ask About Financing And Payment Plans
Most orthodontists offer financing. It, “Pays,” to shop around and find one with a treatment and payment plan that works for you.
Have an orthodontic exam for your child at the age of 7 to assess and plan for any future orthodontic needs. If you can get braces out of the way before all the drama of junior high and middle school, it will make life soooooo much easier, friends! Treatment may also be less complicated and costly. Truly-If I could go back in time we would have started much earlier.
Find A Waiting Room Designed For Multi-Taking Families!
Little things do make a difference! Look for a provider that makes your visit pleasant and productive. At Smiles, you’ll enjoy free WiFi, beverages, and plenty of fun toys to keep younger siblings happy.
Know The Policy For Emergencies
If something does break or come loose, it will be much less stressful if you know what to do! There are actually many quick fixes you can do at home, but there are some repairs that need to be made in the office. Dr.Larson has some great how-tos on his website. We have had to go in a couple of times, and they have always been able to see us the same day-they’ve even fit us in on days they aren’t normally open. We love that!
If you have a great tip, we’d love for you to leave a comment and let us know.
