Northwest Trek Open for Wild Walks

July 17, 2020 by Maegen Blue

Another popular area attraction is open again. Sort of.

Northwest Trek is opening a, “Wild Walk.”

This option will be different than what you are used to at Northwest Trek. Basically, you will get to explore the areas you walk around normally on a one way path, but it will NOT include the tram ride.

Because of this, the ticket prices are quite a bit less than normal. Whether you’ll think it’s worth it at the reduced price, is up to you. It’s not a huge area, and if your kids are the type who just race right by stuff, and/or they’re too young to read or learn much, it may not be. On the other hand, if your peeps are big time into nature and animals, and you really need to get out of the house, it just may be.

We’ve heard from readers who really enjoyed it and thought it was easier to socially distance and see animals than at the zoo.

Our Trek friends tell us there are also a lot of baby animals now. Cute alert!

You will need a timed ticket, and you will need to buy them online, in advance. There are also a few other important things to know below.

Again, the big one is that this is a Wild Walk option, but not a full Trek experience with the tram.

There IS an option to drive thru the tram area in your own car, but that Wild Drive experience requires a whole separate (and pretty pricey) ticket. It’s also been super popular, with tickets selling out fast.

Here is more on the Wild Walk straight from the Trek site.

Wild Walk Experience Details

When: 9:30am – 5:30pm (last entry 4:30pm)
Tickets: Online timed tickets required for everyone over 2 (including members).
What to expect: Follow the instructions on your ticket to enter the park safely, then follow the marked arrows to meet our animals. You can stay in the park as long as you like.
What to bring: Face coverings (required for everyone 5 and over), water bottle, your own stroller/wheelchair, credit/debit cards (no cash).

What you’ll see: Bears, cats, canines, wolverines, birds, forest and wetland animals. The outdoor food kiosk is open.

What’s closed: Tram rides are temporarily unavailable. The Kids’ Trek playground, Zip Wild, Cheney Discovery Center, the Baker Cabin, Forest Cafe and Gift Shop are all temporarily closed.

You can read more Wild Walk FAQs and get tickets here.

You can read more about the Wild Drive experience here at the Trek site or here in our post!

What else is open?

You can now go to the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium, Fort Nisqually, and many area playgrounds. All of these have some restrictions, mostly to keep you socially distanced.

I’ll continue to do my best to keep you posted on what’s open and what’s closed. If there is something particular I can help with, or if you have a tip, come on over to one of the social channels, and let me know!

Puyallup Taco Bus Opens

July 17, 2020 by Maegen Blue

The Puyallup Taco Bus is finally going to open-now as a bricks and mortar restaurant!

This isn’t our usual family fun content, but tacos are MY kind of fun, and, “When is the taco bus going to open?” has been the question for Puyallup for a while now.

Los Amigos Taqueria posted this on their fb page:

Tomorrow July 17th is a big day for us and for the city of puyallup as puyallup’s infamous taco bus will open up its new brick and mortar location!!!!!
Hours for tomorrow will be !!!!!10am-12am!!!!!!
Now we have x’s spaced out outside 6-7 feet apart to ensure safety, please wear a mask when entering the taqueria, we will have limited seating inside so we encourage take out! We will have 2-3 people on the floor disinfecting tables and seats after the occupants leave the table to ensure a clean and sanitize table. If you are ordering takeout please order your food and wait outside, you will be assigned a number and you will exit the side door and wait outside and we will call your order on the window on the side , if you are waiting please keep masks on and we have set a perimeter with cones meant for people waiting.
The address is 4215 s meridian puyallup, Washington 98373
Note from SFM: I think you should always be extra kind to any restaurant during their opening, and I think right now would be a good time to be extra gracious.

Playgrounds Open in Fife

July 16, 2020 by Maegen Blue

Another area parks department has opened its playgrounds.

The playgrounds at Fife parks are now open, with restrictions.

You (or your kids) are asked to play in groups of five or less and to stay six feet apart. Playgrounds are inspected but not disinfected or sanitized, so you should bring your own hand sanitizer and remind your kiddos not to touch their faces.  You’re also asked to limit your time so others can play, and please don’t visit if you’re sick or have recently been sick or exposed.  Be nice, basically.

You can see the official announcement here.

If you’re not quite ready to hit the playground, Fife has a really nice trail system, and those are also open for your socially distanced strolling pleasure!

Mary Olson Farm in Auburn Open Hours for Summer of 2020

July 16, 2020 by Maegen Blue

Here’s a fun outing if you’d like a place to take the kids for a picnic near Auburn. Yes, it has open hours for the Summer of 2020.

The Mary Olson Farm is a quiet little treasure. It’s a preserved farm on Green River Road, and a visit is a bit like stepping back in time.

“It is said to be King County’s best preserved subsistence farm and has been fully restored.”

Due to social distancing the weaving shed and farmhouse are closed, but you can still wander around the farm grounds and imagine a time when folks really did depend on what they grew and made themselves. It’s not a, “Wow!” kind of outing, but it’s a nice, quiet place to have a picnic and unplug the kids for a bit. It’s also a nice, wide space, so social distancing shouldn’t be a problem. My boys always enjoyed running around and seeing the animals.

And if your kids need a livelier outing after, it’s close to many of Auburn’s fun trails (open) and playgrounds (open with limits on number of children). Practice social distancing and recreate responsibly.

Mary Olson Farm Hours and Open Times This Summer

The Mary Olson Farm will be open every Saturday and Sunday June 20 – August 30, 2020 from 11am – 4pm. Bring a picnic, meet our animals, and enjoy a summer day at this beautifully restored historic property!  Free admission during regular open hours. To help us maintain this wonderful property, a suggested donation of $5 per adult and $2 per child is greatly appreciated.

Their fb page is here.

The farm website page is here.

Fort Nisqually Opens for Summer of 2020

July 16, 2020 by Maegen Blue

We’re excited to announce that Fort Nisqually, the cool fort that serves as a living history museum at Point Defiance, IS OPEN again for the summer of 2020! This is a super fun place to take kids, and we’re so excited to see more spots like this opening.

The fort reopened July 15th. You do need to get timed, entry tickets online, in advance.

And-hot tip alert-the fort IS hosting summer camps this year, and some still have room. Woot! You can check out their camp options here.

Fort Nisqually Events with Kids

If you haven’t been to Fort Nisqually with kids before, it’s well worth a visit. My family and I go here often because we’re big history buffs, but even young kids will have fun running around the grass field, trying out the old fashioned games, and going up the towers.

Fort Nisqually was originally located in Dupont and was a Hudson’s Bay Trading Company outpost. The buildings you can explore today are recreations and help kids (and adults) imagine life at an 1800’s settlement.

You can go shop at the store; see the quarters where workers would have lived; check out the chickens, and maybe catch a demonstration, like blacksmithing. Typically, there are also volunteers in period dress giving demonstrations or talks. Note that I don’t know how many of those folks will be around, and some interactive, high touch experiences may not be available. Indoor capacity is also limited.

As you can imagine, there are some restrictions to keep everyone safe. You will also need a timed entry ticket.

Honestly, we go here at least a couple times every summer and have never encountered more than one or two other groups here except during an event, so I think this is going to be one of the easier places in the area to socially distance.

Here are some additional measures the fort is taking:

  • Limiting the number of guests onsite at any time (online ticketing for all guests)
  • Ensuring social distancing and minimizing person-to-person contact (credit cards only)
  • Face covering required (over 5 years old)
  • Adopting stricter cleaning and sanitizing protocols (focus on high-touch surfaces, sanitizing stations)
  • Following all public health guidelines (staff training)
  • Reduced capacity to indoor spaces and high-touch, interactive experiences

You can read more about the fort and the enhanced safety precautions, and get your timed entry ticket, here.

Curbside Book Pick Up Now Available at the Puyallup Public Library

July 14, 2020 by Maegen Blue

Good news, Puyallup book fans! You CAN get books from the library!

While you can’t yet go into the library, the Puyallup Public Library now has curbside pick-up, so you can go get new books for you or the kids!

Wondering how it works? Here’s the scoop!

  • You’ll need to place a hold on what you want via phone 253.841.5454, email puylib@ci.puyallup.wa.us, or the library catalog you log into via the web or mobile app. To do the log in you’ll need your library card number and pin. If you need help with any of that, just call your friendly librarian.
  • If you don’t know what you want, or you need help picking out stuff for the kids, library staff can help with that, too! Give them a call or email, and they’ll help you find materials. You’ll want to give them an idea of what you’re looking for, and for the kids, what their reading level is.
  • Allow 48 hours for your request to be processed. If your items are available, you’ll get a notification that you can come get them during the following hours:

Tuesday & Wednesday – 11am to 1pm / 2pm to 6pm (no pickup service between 1pm-2pm)
Thursday, Friday & Saturday – 10am to 12pm / 1pm to 5pm (no pickup service between noon-1pm)

  • When you arrive at the library, follow the posted instructions to receive your items.  Call or text the number provided in the instructions with your first and last name, and a library staff member will bring your items out to your car within 15 minutes.  Please remain in your car during the entire transaction for the safety of both yourself and library staff.

That’s pretty much it! If you don’t have a Puyallup Library card, you can sign up for one online or give them a call. If your card isn’t working, or you have questions about fines or so on, they can help with all that as well.

One note because I know a lot of us are doing decluttering: The library is NOT currently taking book donations, so you’ll need to find another home for those. Maybe your Goodwill, or a nearby Little Library, or your Buy Nothing group?

I included what I thought you most needed to know in this post, but you can also check the library’s FAQs here!

Don’t forget that you can also do the library’s summer reading program. While it’s gone virtual, it’s still awesome! They’ve had some amazing content via Zoom, and kids can still log reading and earn a chance at prizes.

I’ll also put a plug in for the library’s many online services. I use Libby to read books on my Kindle, and it’s AWESOME.

Meeker Days Canceled for 2020

July 14, 2020 by Maegen Blue

Bad news if you’ve been wondering about Meeker Days.

Meeker Days is the latest area summer festival or event to be canceled for 2020.

Originally postponed, this big Puyallup area street fair style celebration has now been definitely canceled due to Covid concerns and issues around crowd size.

You can read the full announcement here.

Puyallup Playgrounds Are Not Open

July 12, 2020 by Maegen Blue

The playgrounds at City of Puyallup Parks are still closed.

You may have wondered if they’re open as the fencing has been torn down at some, but that was unauthorized. As of today, 7/11, Puyallup playgrounds are closed, and the city tells me there are no plans to open them in the near future.

You can see their responses to me below in response to whether they were open and when they would be.

Many area playgrounds ARE open, but with restrictions. If your kids are desperate to go to one, open playgrounds include those run by Pierce County Parks, Metro Parks Tacoma, City of Orting, City of Kent, the City of Auburn, and the City of University Place. Note that you will want to confirm that for yourself before you go out as openings and closings change fast.  I do my best to keep up with them, but I also always include links so YOU can confirm the details!

If you know of a playground opening or change I should add, please let me know!

I know that many folks have a lot of feels about this topic, and I’d encourage you to direct those to decision makers for your area. I try to share useful information for area families, but I am absolutely not in charge of any. of this, and I always want YOU to make decisions for your family. Have a great day!
