South Sound Kids Bowl Free 2018

May 28, 2018 by Maegen Blue

Kids Bowl Free is back around Tacoma and the rest of the South Sound for the Summer of 2018.

If you’re looking for free or cheap summer fun with the kids, don’t miss this one!

Kids Bowl Free Federal Way, Burien, Puyallup, Tacoma, JBLM, Lakewood, Yelm, Olympia

This year, you don’t have to wait until school is out to sign up for Kids Bowl Free! In fact, we checked all the Tacoma and South Sound area Kids Bowl Free locations, and all of them are open for sign up now! Yep, you can start free bowling this week and bowl almost all summer long. Woot!

If you’re not familiar with this program, it’s way cool! Kids get TWO free games of bowling every day, all summer long, from Burien to Olympia! * You will have to pay the nominal shoe rental fee, but that’s usually just a couple bucks! Another option is to buy them some shoes if you plan on going every day.

There really is no catch to this program! When you register your kiddos, you’ll also be given the option to purchase a family pass for about $25. If you’d like to bowl along with the kids, this really is an excellent deal, but you’re in no way obligated to get the family pass in order for your kids to bowl for free. Just click the “No Thanks” button if you don’t want it.

South Sound Locations:

Hi-Line Lanes, Burien: May 1-September 30
Secoma Lanes, Federal Way: TBA; you can sign up to be notified
Daffodil Bowl, Puyallup: May 14-September 4
Chalet Bowl, Tacoma: April 29-August 31st  Note from SFM: We love this one!
Paradise Bowl, Tacoma: April 30-September 30
Tower Lanes, Tacoma: May 1-September 15
Bowlero Lanes, Lakewood: April 2-September 9
Bowl Area Lanes, JBLM: May 1-September 30
Sounders Lanes and Family Center, JBLM: May 1-September 30
Prairie Lanes, Yelm: May 1-October 15
Aztec Lanes, Olympia: April 10-July 28

How To Sign Up:

To bowl free, you’ll need to register your family. Go to Kids Bowl Free and select the bowling alley nearest you to register. You’ll receive coupons emailed to you for free bowling! Easy peasy!

Pro tip: If the kids are throwing all gutter balls, have the attendant put up the bumpers/rails!

We know lots of you do this program every summer. Be sure to pass it on to friends who might not know about it yet. We’d also love to read any tips you might have, and we’d love to hear about which alleys are your favorites.

Need more to do? We’re rolling out our whole summer guide this week! Stay tuned!

Meet Mariners Grand Slam Camps

May 24, 2018 by Maegen Blue

South Puget Sound Area Baseball and Softball Camps With the Seattle Mariners Grand Slam Camps

We’re so pleased to have Mariners Grand Slam Camps as part of our sponsorship team again this summer.

Baseball and Fastpitch Softball Camps in Puyallup, Sumner, Lacey, Federal Way, and other convenient locations!

The Seattle Mariners have officially partnered with Grand Slam Camps to provide baseball and fastpitch softball camps for kids around the Puget Sound.

Now officially called Mariners Grand Slam Camps, these are not your ordinary baseball camps. If you’re used to camps that offer drills and a few games, you will be pleasantly surprised by the true, Seattle Mariners experience your child will get to enjoy with Mariners Grand Slam Camps.

Camp is about building skills but also teaching a true love of the game. Kids will enjoy a week of surprises, top-flight instruction, and lots of old-fashioned fun, whether they’re beginners or all-stars.

Our older son did camp with the original Grand Slam several years ago, and he had a great time. I was very impressed with the skill level of the staff and how they made sure that every child was learning and feeling excited about baseball. It was his very first experience with baseball, and I was amazed at how much he learned and so pleased with how positive he felt after every session.

There are three camps offerings with convenient locations around the South Sound.

  • The Complete Camp runs from 9:00 AM-12:30 PM from Monday through Thursday.  Instructional sessions are held at the top of each hour with a general focus on situational game play and instruction about a variety of different skills of the game.  Each field has two coaches – typically current college players – who are constantly teaching the finer points to players as the games are played.  This is where the real learning occurs.
  • The Skills Camp runs from 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM Monday through Thursday and is instructionally based.  All receive hitting instruction, but also select a defensive position of emphasis; pitcher, catcher or infield.
  • The Camp Bundle offers Complete + Skills Camps at a discount plus one-hour of lunch supervision at no added cost. It runs from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM.  In most locations, a separate fastpitch softball camp is offered as well as baseball.

Each camp is lead and coordinated by certified teachers who have deep knowledge of the game so parents can count on a safe, upbeat, and professional environment.  Add in many surprises and the constant influence of the Seattle Mariners, and you have a camp like no other.  To top it all off, all campers are invited to an additional camp session in August at Safeco Field.  This is part of the camp experience and is included at no additional cost. Note from SFM: These are very well priced camps already!

For more information you can visit  their website here.

To register just head here!

Questions? Email info@marinerscamps.org or call, text or leave voicemail at: 360-802-2232

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post. The folks at Mariners Grand Slam Camps were some of this site’s earliest sponsors. We’d love for you to mention Sounds Fun Mom when you register if you have a chance. Thanks for doing that!

New After School Program, Camps and Classes at Freedom Martial Arts

May 22, 2018 by Maegen Blue

Have you been looking for a kids’ Taekwondo or martial arts class?
We’re so please to have our friends at Freedom Martial Arts back as sponsors this month. They have a new after school program for kids, plus great summer camps, and a self-defense program for women and teens.

A.C.E. Takewondo After School Program in Edgewood

I think you’ll be especially interested in their A.C.E. after school program if you’ve been looking for a positive, structured activity for your kids after school.

ACE is not a daycare program, but an active recreation program that also helps kids develop individual character in a positive, encouraging and supportive environment. There are individual activities as well as group times.

The program provides after school transport service from local elementary schools and includes time for homework, recreation, and active play. Plus, the A.C.E. staff will love your kids, and your kids will love A.C.E.!

All of this is offered for a very affordable rate that includes the Takewondo and the uniform. There is also a 20% discount for members of the military or those employed with police and fire departments.

For more information, just head here! Are you a homeschooling family? They’d be glad to talk to you about scheduling Takewondo classes at a time that works for you, too!

Freedom Martial Arts Summer Camps Edgewood

The fun doesn’t end when school gets out, either! Freedom Martial Arts has great camps all summer, and they’re a great deal, too. One week of camp with five days of fun is just 150.00, and your rate includes Takewondo classes. Sibling discounts are available, as are rates if you just need a one or three day camp! You can get more info. on that here, or see their complete listing in our summer camp guide.

Freedom Martial Arts Self Defense Classes for Women and Girls

Freedom Martial Arts also offers programs for grown-ups, including weekly self defense programs designed for women and teens. These empowering classes will teach you important skills and help you feel confident and safer.

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post. If you check out the A.C.E. program or one of Freedom Martial Arts great camps or self defense classes, I do hope you’ll mention you saw them on Sounds Fun Mom. This site exists because of our local sponsors!

Tacoma Area Spraygrounds On

May 14, 2018 by Maegen Blue

Wondering which Tacoma area spray grounds are on?

Great news!

Metro Parks Tacoma has announced an early opening for some of their splash pads. You can visit the spray grounds at Franklin Park, Jefferson Park, and the STAR center today, May 14th, until 8PM, or tomorrow, Tuesday, May 15th, from 10AM-8PM. They are all free! After Tuesday, they will be open on weekends only through May 26th, when they will start having daily open times. If they have any other early open days I will let you know!

You should also find the spray grounds on at Point Ruston and Pioneer Park/Downtown Puyallup.

The stream by the Hands On Children’s Museum at the East Bay Plaza in Olympia is also on, as is the fountain in Olympia. I *think* the water features in Kent may be on, but I have not had a chance to check on those yet. Let me know if you know about any others that are on already!

Other area spray grounds and splash pads typically open Memorial Day. We will have a whole guide to all of them right here!

Summer Bingo Board

May 11, 2018 by Maegen Blue

Kids already using the dreaded, “B,” word? Maybe you’d like our

Free Summer Bingo Board!

I made this back when bucket lists were all the rage. Each square has a fun thing you can do with the kids this summer. Most are local, and all are affordable. One does mention the Kids Skate Free program, which doesn’t seem to be a, “Thing,” around here any more. There are still lots of places the kids can bowl free, though!

I went with a Bingo Board instead of a bucket list because I think it’s less pressure. You can, “Win,” by just doing five! Or any number you want, really!

If you’d like the bingo board, you can just click the link below to download the pdf. If another format would work better, send me an email, and I’ll see what I can do! Note that there are two versions of this board that are just slightly different. If you’d like one for a different area, let me know, and I’ll put it on my (kind of long) to-do list.
