Preschool at Annie Wright Schools

June 29, 2017 by Maegen Blue Leave a Comment

Hey, Tacoma, Did you know our lovely sponsor, Annie Wright Schools,  has a preschool program?

It’s true! In fact, they have full-day and half-day options starting at age three!

That means you don’t have to wait to enroll your little scholar in one of the very best private schools in the area.

I think you can see in this little video what makes Early Childhood Education at Annie Wright so special, but just in case you missed it, here are a few highlights!

First, class size is limited to 16 students with TWO teachers.

Second, the curriculum offers much more than a typical preschool.

Preschoolers at Annie Wright receive instruction in traditional kindergarten readiness skills like math, letters, and writing, and every child also gets to learn Spanish, swimming, lab science, art, library, and PE as part of the curriculum-each with a separate teacher who specializes in those subjects. Amazing, right?

I promise this is not a program you’ll find just anywhere!

Kids also get plenty of time for good, old-fashioned play.

Early Childhood tuition is for an entire year of coverage-that means your tuition includes the totally awesome Summer@Annie Wright offerings, Plus programming over school breaks, And before and after school care!

There aren’t many decisions more important than your child’s education. If you’re looking for the very best for your bright, young student, make sure you put Annie Wright on your list of go-sees!

And, speaking of that-the very best way to choose a school for your child is to speak with the people there in person.

If you’d like to learn more, contact their super friendly Lower School admissions director Joy Phelps at joy_phelps@aw.org or 253.284.8602

You can also learn more at their site here!

Disclosure: We are super proud to be sponsored by Annie Wright Schools.  We’d LOVE for you to mention Sounds Fun Mom when you check out their preschool program!

Spots Open at Camp Fire Camps for All Ages!

June 27, 2017 by Maegen Blue Leave a Comment

Are you struggling with finding things for your kids or teens to do this summer?

It’s not too late to get them in a great summer camp! Our sponsor, Camp Fire Orca, has camps for every kind of camper, including their popular Puyallup area day camp, and their camp just for middle schoolers (Problem solved alert)!!  Plus, they offer an overnight experience.

Their day camp is coming right up July 10th-14th at Wildwood Park in Puyallup. It’s 150.00 for the full session (‘Um…guys? This is a Great deal)! Kids will enjoy all kinds of traditional camp activities including crafts, drama, cookouts, hikes, and more. Readers have loved this one in the past.

There is also a leadership opportunity for kids in grades 7-9, and the program fee for that is just 100.00!

Camp ends with a special family night on Thursday, with an overnight camp out option for 7th graders and up.

Camp Fire also offers a unique program called Middle School Adventures July 24th-28th. Campers entering grades 6-8 plan their camp experience, which will include a daily outing to a cool area destination Tuesday through Friday. Maybe a train ride to Tacoma and a visit to the Glass Museum, or a bus ride to American Lake for swimming….it’s all kid planned! Awesome, right?

There are also still spots at Camp Orca, the overnight camp at Sound View Camp in Longbranch in August.

For more information on all their camps, just head here and look for the menu under, “Summer Camp!”

And, finally, our friends at Camp Fire wanted to share a little bit about what makes Camp Fire unique. You might be surprised by all they do these days!

Why Camp Fire? Camp Fire was created to guide young people on a journey of self-discovery. At Camp Fire camps, youth have the opportunity to dig deep inside and discover their sparks, their personally defined ideas of potential. Our society needs a generation of future leaders who understand the dynamics of community living, appreciate inclusion, and are one with nature. At Camp Fire, we’re proud of the role we play in guiding young lives to appreciate themselves and the world they live in.

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post. The opinions are our own! I was a Camp Fire counselor way back in the day, and it was Awesome! If you mention Sounds Fun Mom when you sign up for camp that would be Awesome, too!

Stewart Heights and Kandle Park Pools Open!

June 21, 2017 by Maegen Blue Leave a Comment

Lucky you! The two very fun, outdoor pools in Tacoma have opened, just in time for the heat we’re supposed to get this weekend.

There are two public, outdoor pools run by Metro Parks Tacoma. You don’t have to live in Tacoma to use them.

One is at Kandle Park. It’s actually a wave pool. I know-how cool is that? There is also a sprayground area and tot pool here as well as a fun playground.

Photos by Russ Carmack

As you can tell, it does get crowded at times, but we’ve heard nothing but good reviews from readers. Tip: They keep the water nice and warm, so you might want to go on a cloudy or cooler day to have less company! It has a beach style entry which is nice for younger kids or middle aged ladies who don’t like to be suddenly underwater (ahem….).

Admission is 6.00 kids/8.00 adults for a half session. Kids 4 and under are free.

Hours and the rest of the rules are here!

Another option is the outdoor pool at Stewart Heights. [Read more…]

Auburn Kids Day Friday!

June 20, 2017 by Maegen Blue Leave a Comment

Guys!  KidsDay from Auburn Parks, Arts & Recreation is coming up Friday, and you do not want to miss this full day of FREE fun just for kids! It’s totally worth the trip for families anywhere nearby!

It all happens at Les Gove Park, 910 Ninth Street SE on Friday, June 23rd, from 11AM-4PM.

KidsDay Logo_COLOR smaller

There will be  inflatable rides, children’s activities, live stage entertainment, mini golf, free museum admission, hundreds of cool vendors (Like US!)  and much, much more. Admission is FREE and so are most of the activities!

Do bring a little cash if you want to do attractions like the swings or get some eats from a food vendor.

kids day smaller

Parking is available in and around the park, with overflow parking at Grace Community Church and street parking surrounding the park.

My boys and I have gone to this event several times and always had fun. The lines for the inflatables get long, so you might want to encourage your kiddos to check out other stuff because there is so much to do.

We also like to go early or late in the day for even more fun with lighter crowds, but I’ll leave that part up to you.

For additional event information, parking information, a festival map or entertainment schedule, you can check out the event page on Facebook.

or at the city website here!

And, oh, yeah-We’ll be there! Do be sure to stop by the Sounds Fun Mom booth to say, “Hi!” and chat about summer activities. I’d love to meet you.

PS This event is always the Friday after Auburn schools get out. I know some of you in neighboring districts are still in school for what seems like forever. I’m tempted to suggest your kids could probably miss a couple hours that day, but I shouldn’t do that…….luckily,  we do have another list of summer events going on all summer for you to check out. And Auburn, in particular, is absolutely rocking it with all their family offerings!

Disclosure: We are proud to be a media partner with the City of Auburn Parks Department. They’ve been super cool partners of ours since way back when. If you have a chance to say you heard about their events on Sounds Fun Mom, I’d really appreciate it!

Hike Report: Roegner Park and White River Trail

June 13, 2017 by Tiffany Guerzon Leave a Comment

Hike Report: Roegner Park Trails

601 Oravetz Road SE, Auburn

Roegner Park is a 21 acre community park located along the bank of the White River in Auburn.  The park itself features a picnic pavilion, playground, public art, and trails. Although the playground is currently under renovation, there are great stroller-friendly walking trails and lots of grass for play stops. Bring the family dog along and Fido can enjoy the off-leash dog park as well.

There is plenty of parking, but when I was there  the restrooms were locked. (There was a port o potty.) I am assuming the restrooms will be open when the playground is completed

From the parking lot, you can access the White River Trail. Turn right and follow the paved path or the narrower dirt trail. (The two paths will take you to the same place.) The paved path is perfect for strollers, scooters, and kids because it is wide and pretty flat. There are benches and tables along the way.

This bench is a great place to sit and enjoy the view of the river.

You will not only stroll through grassy areas, but get some great views of the White River.

White River

The trail continues 2.5 miles, ending at Game Farm Wilderness Park.  You can also park at Game Farm Wilderness Park and start from there.

For a shorter stroll, start at Roegner Park parking lot and take the path on the left. This trail is about a half mile round trip. Once you pass a daycare center on your left, you can turn around there, or go a bit further. The path continues until you reach a metal sculpture.

The sculpture is cool, but there isn’t much more to see except for a bridge with lots of graffiti. Note from SFM: I tagged along on this outing. Tiffany and I thought the park was clean and pleasant and noticed several other groups out walking. We did notice what looked like some camps under the bridge. If that would concern you, we suggest taking the other route described here or turning around at the day care center/preschool.

Once the playground is finished, this park should make for a great place to meet for a play date and get a little exercise for parents, kids and even the dog!
