Looking for things to do with the kids for Martin Luther King Day, or just wanting something fun to do this weekend in Tacoma, Olympia, Puyallup, or another South Sound Spot?

We’ve got you covered with our weekly guide to free and affordable fun for families in the South Puget Sound. My favorite thing about this weekend’s list? Lots of it is FREE!

Friday

Learn about the science of circuits and lights at the Puyallup Public Library 3:30

Fridays are a big day for story times. Check a Pierce County Library branch near you!

Monster Jam at the Tacoma Dome Also Saturday and Sunday

Family movie night and glow play at WiggleWorks!  Such a fun, low stress family night!

Want to go sledding or play in the snow? Here’s our guide!

Want a winter road trip? January weekends you can head up to the Skagit River to see the eagle migration! *I believe the center is closed MLK day.

South King County

Visit the HCC Mast Center at Redondo The center and its touch tanks of sea critters are free and open to the public every Saturday from 10-2 Back open!
Puyallup/South Hill

Discovering Our Story Event at the Fife Library 1PM-2:30

Hear stories told by Toby Joseph Sr., a member of the Northwest Indian Storytellers Association. Take part in a potlatch-style giveaway of Native American books. Make a craft to help you tell your family’s stories. Pizza snacks provided.

Western Washington Dog Show at the Puyallup Fairgrounds Free admission; Henry and I went to one and had a lot of fun meeting the dogs. If you teach your children to ask first, most handlers are very friendly and open to having kids pet them. also Sunday and Monday

Lego My Library at the Puyallup Public Library Stories and Lego building time 11AM

Tacoma/South Tacoma/Lakewood/Parkland

PBS Playdate at the Children’s Museum 10AM  Splash and Bubbles is the tie in today. Free, drop-in programs

Monster Jam at the Tacoma Dome Also Sunday

Ranger lead walk at the rhody garden in Point Defiance Free nature walks; not suitable for strollers; perfect for ages 3 and up. You are now asked to register to hold your spot-do that via the link provided. 1PM

Opening day of Frog and Toad at Tacoma Musical Playhouse Two shows today; one Sunday  autographs and photos with the cast are available after the shows!

Children and all ages shows at the Pierce College Science Dome/planetarium The children’s show is H2O this week. Children’s show at 12:30 or 2PM; all ages at 3:15. The children’s show is shorter and interactive and now expanded to suit ages 3-12!  My kiddo LOVED it. Seriously-this is a Great outing. Go! You do want to buy tickets in advance or bring cash.

Olympia area

Family story time at the Olympia Timberland Library 11AM There is also coloring at 1

Visit the South Sound Estuarium interactive marine discovery! Open 11-4 weekends at their new location. You may want to call to confirm hours before you go.

Visit the LOTT Wet Science Center and learn about earthquakes today. There is a presentation at 2PM best for kids 10 and up, but there are related activities for all ages available all day. The center is free!

OFS Kids Club presents a free showing of Trolls at Capitol Theater Free for 12 and under; general admission is 8.00 or 5.00 for members. Doors open at 10:30; film at 11

Gig Harbor/Kitsap

Mendhi Madness at the Key Center Library Learn about Medhi-henna and create a temporary tattoo. Registration required. 

Sunday

Snowman Building Contest at Sprinker Rec Center! Teams get a 55 gallon bucket of snow (technically shavings from the zamboni) and 45 minutes to build a snowman! 20.00 and you do need to pre-register. Participants get coupons for free admission to a future skate session.

Frog n Toad at Tacoma Musical Playhouse

Washington State Parks are FREE (no Discover Pass required) on the 15th and 16th in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King day.
