Winter Road Trip Idea: See The Eagle Migration At The Skagit River!

December 11, 2016 by Maegen Blue

If you’re looking to fill some winter break days, I’ve got a great idea for you! Head north just two hours from Seattle for a wild and educational trip with our sponsors at the Skagit River Bald Eagle Interpretive Center in Skagit County.

This is a perfect winter road trip. It’s not too far away, but it’s far enough that you’ll feel like you’ve really gone somewhere. Seeing the eagles is Amazing, and almost all the activities are Free, so this is a very affordable outing, you’ll remember forever.

The eagles (thousands of them)!  migrate during the winter, making December and January prime viewing times at the center at Howard Miller Steelhead Park. You should know they don’t flock-so your odds of seeing them are awesome, but don’t look for them in bunches!

Visitors can take a guided nature walk along the Skagit River looking for eagles and other wildlife. Outside the Center a life size eagle’s nest awaits kid’s questions during interpretive talks.

After you walk you can head inside and warm up with hot cocoa while you check out videos or the Children’s Corner. There are also speaker presentations every Saturday to encourage dialogue about environmental issues.

Before you leave, you can shop at the Nature Store featuring handmade items by local artisans and educational wildlife materials for your next family outdoor adventure.

President Cora Thomas shares her view, “My favorite part of this advocacy work is seeing the kids’ faces light up with wonder as we conduct demonstrations. When they can be exposed and appreciate the natural world at a young age we hope they’ll be more cognizant about the environment as they grow up. Our work is important for future generations. The public’s support is so crucial in continuing our mission of environmental stewardship awareness for years to come.”

SRBEIC celebrates 20 Years with their first Photo Contest, an official poster, and special events. Celebrate 20 years of being inspired by the Upper Skagit River Valley. View the migration of raptors in their natural habitat this winter. Open weekends December through January, and for Christmas Break, December 26-30, 10am to 4pm. Closed December 24, 25. Free admission. Donations appreciated. To learn more visit Skagit Eagle here or follow them on Facebook.

Additional activities in eastern Skagit County include the Skagit Eagle Festival, with activities in Concrete, Rockport, and Marblemount, sponsored by Concrete Chamber of Commerce. Skagit.KidInsider.com is a fast and easy way to search for additional family fun activities in Skagit County during this holiday season.
