Did you know you can pick blueberries for FREE in Tacoma at Charlotte’s in Tacoma? YES! There is FREE pesticide-free blueberry picking at this public park in Tacoma. Read our full review on this awesome treasure for free blueberry picking. If you’ve been recently to Charlotte’s, please leave a comment and let us know if the picking is still good! You can also pay to u-pick at a variety of U Pick Blueberries Near South Puget Sound.
Visit the open air Pacific Bonsai Museum in Federal Way. The collection of over 100 bonsai includes tiny trees, some of which are over 100 years old! Take a stroll through the museum grounds and imagine what it would be like to live in a miniature world. It’s FREE to visit the museum!
We LOVE to meet our readers! Did you know that Sounds Fun Mom is hosting Playdates in the Park this summer? We had an amazing turnout at our July event and can’t wait to meet more of our friends in August. Come out and meet a Princess, share some milk from Smith Brothers and tell us what you would like to see more of on Sounds Fun Mom. We will be at Les Gove Park in Auburn on Tuesday, August 9 and August 23. If you RSVP, we’ll have a gift for you at the park.
If you can’t make it on a Tuesday morning, or just want to come to even MORE of our reader events, join Sounds Fun Mom in Puyallup on Saturday, August 13 from 2-5pm for an Enchanted Day of Play.It’s FREE, but pre-registration will score you a swag bag! Note that it is sold out, but we are accepting names for the wait list, and we do anticipate releasing some tickets.
Summer is the perfect time to make a trek with your kids to Mt. Rainier, not just for hiking, but for wildflower viewing! The season to see them is short. So, choose from one of our favorite kid friendly wildflower hikes at Mt. Rainier and grab your boots! While you’re there, be sure to get your kid’s started on collecting stamps in their national parks’ passports! Visit all national parks for free, August 25-28 in celebration of National Park Service’s birthday.
On Sundays through Labor Day, take a FREE tour of historic Fort Steilacoom from 1:00pm-4:00pm. Fort Steilacoom is an important part of the our history as a state, where the early settlers migrated and secured a place in U.S. history. The fort’s remaining structures include the original officer’s homes where you can see military clothing, a cannon, and more artifacts from 19th century military history.
What kid doesn’t love a ride on a train? The Link Light Rail in Tacoma is FREE for all riders. Ride it from the park and ride at the Tacoma Dome station all the way to the final stop in the Theater District. Or, get off at the Convention Center stop and walk one block east to the Children’s Museum of Tacoma, which is always pay as you will.
Catch a Show at the Library
Your local library is the place to be all summer. It’s not too late to sign up for a Library Summer Reading Program. And, catch one of the awesome shows at your library! This week you can see Duo Finelli perform their Bing Bang Boom Show on Wednesday, August 3, at 11:00am at Southcenter Mall. On Tuesday, August 9, drop by the Auburn library from 2-3pm for The Happy Planet Dance Party! On Friday, August 12 at 11:00am, visit the Bonney Lake library to learn all about Amazing Animal Athletes. The Pt Defiance Zoo will be on hand with a with an animal member of the zoo team! Visit your favorite library’s calendar page to find out what other shows are happening near you this month!
Go on a Hike with Friends

Find out all about this amazing organization that makes hiking with your littles safe, easy, and a great way to make friends who are in the same season of life. Each week, meet up with friends at a designated time and spot in the South Sound and explore hikes that our beautiful region has to offer.

Stop by the Skansie Visitor’s Center of Harbor WildWatch in Gig Harbor to get your hands wet in the touch tanks and meet South Sound marine life up close. Or, show up for one of their many events including guided beach walks, Pier Into the Night, junior naturalist training programs, and more! Peruse the Calendar of Events for all of Harbor WildWatch’s upcoming activities.
Did you know that the Port of Tacoma offers FREE boat tours nearly every month? Take a boat ride through the port to learn all about one of the busiest ports in America.
One of our favorite South Sound hikes is Franklin Falls, which is just east off of I-90. Beginner hikers can manage this short, easy hike that ends with a waterfall!
Pierce Transit runs a delightful old fashioned trolley from Gig Harbor’s historic downtown waterfront district and the Uptown shopping district. Pay only 50 cents/ride or $1/day for multiple rides. Trolley’s run every 30 minutes with multiple stops along the route.
Explore more than 250 plants, orchids, and more exotic species at the W.W. Seymour Botanical Conservatory in Wright Park in Tacoma. Not only are the plants worth seeing, the historic glass conservatory is a site to see, and listed on city, state, and national historic registers. Visit the conservatory for free on the third Thursday, August 18, from 10:00am-7:00pm. There is a great sprayground at Wright Park offering free lunch for kids all summer. So, you can really make a day of it at Wright Park!
Attend a show at the Science Dome at Pierce College. Special children’s shows are offered on Saturdays at 12:30pm and 2:00pm are only $6 for ages 3-8 and FREE to all other ages. The shows are interactive, and topics vary from week to week!
