Check Out Free Science To Go Kits From The Pierce County Library!

August 29, 2016 by Maegen Blue

Do you know about Science To Go kits from the Pierce County Library system?

These are fun kits in colorful backpacks that come with all you need to explore different scientific concepts. Perfect to get kids’ brains in back-to-school mode this week, and great for homeschoolers, rainy day fun,  weekend exploration, or anytime, really!

Science to Go_102615_Preschool Kids_photo by Trudy Parman_125

Like all the amazing library services, they’re totally FREE!

Each Science to Go backpack contains five age-appropriate, themed books and a hands-on activity for the whole family. Make a gelatin volcano, design an insect, or watch a pumpkin decompose. Record your observations and draw pictures of your discoveries in a field notebook—just like real scientists—and share with other kids who check out the backpack later.

Science to Go_102615_Preschool Kids_photo by Trudy Parman_61

Science to Go backpacks are available for preschool (new this year), grades K-2 and grades 3-5. There are more than 50 themes, everything from animal homes and colors, to volcanoes and weather, to silly math and outer space.

Science to Go_Ad_300X250 (1)

Henry and I had fun with the weather backpack last year. You should note that the hands-on activity is described on an activity sheet, and it’s a fun and easy way to see the principles you’re learning about in action. The kits do not come with all the supplies you need, though they’re usually very minimal. My kiddo was a little underwhelmed with the backpack when he first opened it and saw books, but he quickly got over it when he realized he was going to get to do real experiments. Our library friends also sent over these cute pics of library patrons Elliott and Alice learning with their parents.

Look for the colorful Science to Go kiosk or shelving area at a Pierce County Library, or place a hold on a backpack through the library catalog. Perfect if you have a theme coming up at your preschool or co-op! You check them out and return them just like books!  Get curious!

Disclosure: We are proud to be a partner of the Pierce County Library System, recognized as one of the country’s best!

Curran Apple Orchard And Cider Squeeze

August 25, 2016 by Maegen Blue

Updated for 2017

If you’re looking for a place to pick your own apples near Tacoma, the short answer is that there are almost no places that offer u pick apple picking. You CAN pick your own apples and make cider one very special day at the Curran Apple Orchard in University Place. It’s coming up this weekend!

You can also visit the Curran Apple Orchard year round. Contributor, Tabitha, tells us it’s a good spot for family photos and quiet picnics. Here’s more!

Henry helping with the wash and rinse back in '07. Ack! How did he get so big? Must have been all the apples....

The Curran Apple Orchard is located in University Place and is just over 7 acres. The Orchard is just about a mile from Chambers Bay, down Grandview. It includes over 200 trees and 15 varieties of apples, and provides shelter and food for birds, insects, small wildlife and deer.

The apple orchard is the perfect place to go relax and enjoy nature. There are benches all around, and  children can run freely through the field and play on the large rocks. It’s also a  great picnic spot. Need family pictures done or a photography location? This is the perfect photography location throughout the year. There is a  wood farm fence, and it’s very peaceful and quiet and has a beautiful array of colors for your backdrop.

Visitors are welcome daily from 8AM-dusk, though the public is not allowed to pick the apples except for on the Cider Squeeze date/time(info below). Porta potty bathrooms are available, and there is limited street parking. The orchard folks also offer school and group tours free of charge, and you can also reserve the orchard for a private event.

The park is open to the public, but if you are interested in supporting the park they offer tree adoptions for families and groups  You’re given the choice between Pruning Adoptions for $40 which require you to prune, thin, harvest and clean up windfalls from the tree. Or Orchard Supporter Adoption for $65 which means the maintainnce of the tree (besides harvesting it) is done  by volunteers. Both are for one season only. What a fun and exciting opportunity for families and children you’ll get to pick (harvest) your own apples, and make as many fresh apple pies and turnovers as you can!

If you’re not interested in adopting a tree and want free apples or just want to attend a fun community event, every fall the Curran Apple Orchard puts on a Cider Squeeze with free admission. I highly suggest showing up as early as possible because the apples do get picked through, and the line for the cider press gets long.

My son and I have gone over the years just to pick free apples.
Here’s what to expect from the event, which is this Sunday, the 27th!

The Cider Squeeze is the celebration of a year’s growth at the orchard and the culmination of lots of pruning, tending and hard work by adopters and volunteers alike. It’s the day we invite the public to come share the bounty of harvest and watch as their apples are pressed to cider while listening to live music. Here’s what to expect:

  • Pick apples from selected trees
  • Walk them through the process to be pressed into cider
  • Enjoy some apple pie and other refreshments
  • Savor the atmosphere of the orchard with Johnny Appleseed, the Big Apple, and Sunset Bible Bluegrass Band

It’s a great opportunity for you, your kids and friends to spend a leisurely Sunday afternoon and enjoy some lively community fellowship.

For more information, head here!

Tabitha Black- local mom, lifestyle, travel and family blogger at Love, Tabitha  Be sure to check her out!

Note from SFM-The photo is not from this event. It’s an old photo from the farm that is now Wild Hare on River Road. They did do cider making last year, though they typically offer u-pick apples only to farm share members, and that depends on the harvest. We will have other posts next month with information on harvest festivals and other cider making events. If you’re up for a road trip, many apple orchards up north near Ferndale, are already offering picking because of the very warm spring. We’ll try to add Tabitha’s Curran Orchard pics-my computer is giving me fits at the moment. Happy picking!

Free Back To School Event In Edgewood Saturday

August 25, 2016 by Maegen Blue

Update-This is an old post.

We have a list of school supply events for 2018 here including this year’s event at Mountain View.

Do you know a child in Puyallup who needs free school supplies? Mountain View Community Center in Edgewood is hosting its annual bbq to help families in need. They expect lots of students from nearby Fife and Puyallup as well.

The event will include school supplies, plus free dental checks, a clothing closet, and a free bbq lunch and carnival fun with bounce houses and face painting.

It’s all free from 10AM-2. The child does need to be present.

I hope you’ll take a minute to share this post. I know I had some serious sticker shock after gearing up my boys this year, and if you’re on a tight budget this time of year can really bust it open!

Puyallup Schools Will Still Start On Time After Bus Fire

August 25, 2016 by Maegen Blue

Puyallup schools will be starting on time, September 6th,  despite the bus barn fire yesterday.

Your child’s bus route May be changed. You can check for that information on the District’s snazzy new website, beginning next week. Don’t check or call today; you’ll just get frustrated, and I promise they’e working as hard as they can on this, and they may not have to change it, depending on what kind of buses they get on loan.

Here’s some more scoop straight from district communications guy, Brian Fox. The good news is that no one was injured, and school will still be starting as planned. Pass it on!

At 2:21 on the afternoon of Wednesday, August 24, Central Pierce Fire was dispatched to the corner of 12 Street NW and West Stewart – the site of Puyallup School District’s Bus Maintenance Facility. While the cause of the fire is not yet certain, the damage is. Twenty-four brand new school buses were damaged beyond repair. These new buses were recently purchased to make the fleet more efficient.

Deputy Fire Marshall Brian Annis-Levings, with Central Pierce Fire and Rescue was on the scene the following morning. He reports officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.

New school buses can run between $90,000 and $130,000 each, so the loss of 24 will have financial impact. However, the Puyallup School District is a member of the Washington Schools Risk Management Pool (WSRMP). Because of membership in self-insured pooling, the buses destroyed will be replaced. Representatives from WSRMP are in the district working with leadership today.

With students starting school again on September 6, district leaders have been especially pleased with the generous response from local and state school districts. Over 16 school districts have been in contact with the Puyallup School District to offer buses on loan. As a result, school will start as planned on Tuesday, September 6.

Depending on the sizes of buses loaned to Puyallup, existing routes may be altered. Beginning next week, parents should check the district website at www.puyallup.k12.wa.us for updated information about bus routes. Regardless of possible adjustments to routes, school will start for Puyallup students on Tuesday, September 6.

Let’s Hike with the Kids: Grove of the Patriarchs

August 23, 2016 by Keri Welch

If you’re making a visit to Mt. Rainier with your kiddos, a great place to start is by hiking at Grove of the Patriarchs, where you can see 1,000 year old trees!

To access this hike, enter the park at the Stevens Canyon Entrance of Mt. Rainier National Park. Continue west until you see the Parking lot with the helpful sign.  There may or may not be a couple of sillies hanging out around there.

Grove9

Take a potty break in the mostly clean bathrooms before hitting the trailhead. The Grove parking lot is also used by visitors to access Silver Falls, which is another great hike that goes a much farther distance. The Grove of the Patriarchs hike is a 1.1 mile mostly flat trail that includes a suspension bridge to a magical island of giant, old growth trees.  The trail is well maintained and easy for little ones to traverse. You could bring your jogging stroller if necessary, but you will need help lifting it over some of the inclines that include steps.

Grove4

Along the hike, you will see many fallen trees with giant root systems. Your kiddos won’t be able to resist a photo op!

grove1

Grove3

You’ll spy the Ohanapecosh River from the trail, too!

Grove2

The highlight for the kiddos on this hike is definitely the suspension bridge that allows crossing over the Ohanapecosh River. The sign alerts that only one person should pass at a time, so be prepared to wait your turn if it’s a particularly busy day at the Grove.

Grove5

Once you’re on the other side, you will come to a boardwalk that winds through the old growth forest. There are benches for resting along the way, or simply sitting and taking in the grandeur of the forest.

Grove6

Continue walking along the boardwalk, which is a loop and you will see this giant 1,000 year old tree that measures more than 7 kids across, or more precisely 40′ in diameter.

Grove7

This hike is ideal for all ages, and is a wonderful start for little legs. Older kiddos will also enjoy the adventure of the suspension bridge, and the magnificence of the giant trees.
