Our writer mom Julie has a review of a great playground for kids looking for fun things to do in Federal Way! Read on for her review of the playground at Steel Lake Park.
Last week we discovered a new-to-us playground in Federal Way: Steel Lake Park!
This park has many features that make it a true destination place to go…an awesome playground, beautiful grassy areas, ball fields, a skate park, and the lake with a boat ramp and swimming area. If you go on a sunny day, you can expect lots of company.
The playground, called “Family Funland” was completely rebuilt and reopened two years ago. It looks like a big castle, complete with turrets and a painting of ivy growing up a climbing wall. The entire front area of the playground, which is “sunk” into a wood-chipped area, is designed with 5-12 year olds in mind, with higher places for climbing, running, and swinging.
The other side has a structure built to suit 2-5 year olds. My son Venture (age 5) and his pal ran off into the play area and were happily entertained for almost 3 hours (with a short break in the middle for playing in the sand on the beach).
Circling around the play area are benches and a bit further back are picnic tables. A bathroom is also nearby.
I think this playgroup is an awesome place for kids 5 and up, and ok for toddlers. We did see plenty of smaller kids, but this is a playground that requires a lot of vigilance. It’s open on all sides, and adjacent to both a parking lot and the beach. There also isn’t much space between the play areas designated for younger and older kids, which means that toddler can easily wander into the bigger kid area even if they don’t mean to. As my friend and I saw on the bench and talked we didn’t have a clear view of our kids much of the time. There’s a lot going on with the play structure itself, and even more so when it’s full of kids!
We will definitely be back to this park! My son came home full of praise for the“Castle Park” and has his older sister excited for a new place to play.
Steel Lake Park is located at 2410 S 312th St, Federal Way, WA 98003
Note from SFM: Lifeguards are on duty at the swimming area during the summer months.
If you’d like to check out a castle themed playground in Pierce County, The Playground By The Sound at Chambers Bay, and the playground at Steilacoom Park are both great choices. If you have a favorite play spot that deserves a playground report of its own, leave a comment and let us know!
