I can hardly believe it, but our big kid is officially a teenager!
He’s still the same curious, funny boy he always has been, but his birthday wishes have definitely changed. For one thing, he prefers cold, hard cash to dinosaurs and Hot Wheels (Sniff).
At the moment, he’s saving for a new computer, and we’re glad that he’s figured out he needs to contribute the bulk of the funds for it.
Getting his own savings account was a huge, first step for him, and it has definitely helped him see the value in saving. He also mows lawns for a little extra money now, and we are so relieved that he no longer rushes out to spend his earnings as soon as he gets them (Yay!)
April is National Credit Union Youth Month, and our friends at WSECU would like to help your kids with their savings goals.
The 2016 theme is, “Credit Union Strong,” with a focus on helping youth get financially fit.
Just as you help your kids stay emotionally healthy and physically fit, you can also help them build good financial habits.
If you have struggled in this area personally, or your kids just want to spend, spend, spend, I’d encourage you to stop by a WSECU branch and let your kids get an account of their own and talk to a friendly credit union staff member (think of them as, “Personal Trainers,”).
Making sure your kids are able to responsibly save and spend their money is truly one of the most important things we need to do to prepare them for (Gulp!) the teen years and adulthood.
All week, from April 18th through the 22nd, they’ll have small gifts for kids who make transactions on their accounts. Don’t have one? Now’s the perfect time to get one. There will also be a full day of fun on the 22nd with snacks and small gifts.
PS Got a little kid having a hard time parting with a piggy bank or change jar? She can trade it in for a journal and a plus, stuffed bunny with a no-fee, 5.00 minimum Munny Bunny Account just for kids!
Disclosure: We are proud to be sponsored by WSECU, a community credit union serving the people of Washington State-hey, that’s you! We love it when you thank any of our great sponsors!
