Mom Reviewed: Teatro ZinZanni Presents Big Top Rock: Rock This Way

April 27, 2016 by Maegen Blue

Our writer mom Julie has a review of Teatro ZinZanni’s family friendly show, Big Top Rock: Rock This Way

Teatro ZinZanni’s family friendly show is back in Seattle and showing on select weekends from now until May 22!  Have you been to one of their three-hour adult dinner shows?  They get rave reviews, but I’ve never see one.  So heading into the family show on their opening weekend, I had no idea what to expect beyond it combining kid friendly live rock music and circus acts.  Ha!

Teatro zin for kids

The minute we stepped into the theatre, we knew we were in for something special.  Teatro ZinZanni is housed in two antique theatre tents, known as spiegeltents (mirror tents).  They are circular and crafted from dark wood, stained glass, red velvet, and gold brocade.  It makes for a magical and cozy setting where there truly are no bad seats!

Teatro two

But the real magic is the show itself.  Kids were invited to dance and watch the show from the front and center mosh pit.  Our 6-year-old daughter loved it, but our 5-year-old son preferred to sit with us.  The show began with The Parkway Boys (the house band) lead by Jen Ayers belting out “I love Rock ‘n’ Roll” and proceeded to play well known hits from Aerosmith, Blondie, David Bowie, and others.   Some of the songs featured dancers Victoria Smith, Riley Marshall, Lily Jacobs from All That Dance.   There was some comedy sprinkled in between songs.  And of course, there were high-flying circus acts by Teatro Zinzanni regulars Duo Madrona, Ling Rui, Max Voronin.  It’s such a fun mix of music, dance, comedy, and circus, you really have to see it to believe it!

The show is one hour (no intermission) of high-energy entertainment that our entire family enjoyed (even my hard to please husband!).

Here’s the details: Doors open at 10:00, show starts at 11:00.  Seating is general admission, so I suggest getting there early.  There’s a parking garage across the street, but if you’re lucky you might score street parking.  The show is 60 minutes long.  Tickets are $25 for chairs that are close to the action, and $20 for booth seating.

Teatro ZinZanni is located at 222 Mercer Street (Mercer Street at 3rd Avenue) near the Seattle Center.
If you go, let us know what you think! More information and tickets here. Shows run through May 22nd.

Disclosure: Our writer was provided with tickets to facilitate this review. Neither she nor the site were otherwise compensated by this production or venue.

Download Kids’ Magazines For Free With Your Pierce County Library Card

April 27, 2016 by Maegen Blue

Guys, I know I go on and on about how much I love our library system, but I just can’t help it! Every month I find out about another new and awesome service the library provides for my favorite price-FREE!

For example, did you know that you can use your library card to download high quality children’s magazines, for FREE?  I know-how great is that??

E-Books_300x250_1015

My kids love magazines, and I love seeing them reading! I especially love all the new things they can learn about science, geography, history, and other topics with specialty magazines just for them. The only problem is that a lot of these are quite expensive. Problem solved!

With your PCL library card you can check out current and back issues. There’s no limit, so download as many as you want. You never have to return a borrowed digital magazine. Woot!!

Choose from magazines such as Ladybug for pre-schoolers and early readers, Click for inquisitive first and second graders and Muse for curious kids in grades 5 through 9. And who can forget Highlights, the beloved magazine delighting children since 1946.  They also have America Girl magazine, and more than 16 children’s titles in total.  through the Zinio download service.

Download the Zinio app through your phone’s app store or visit zinio.pcls.us.  One note-Zinio is not currently compatible with Windows Mobile, Blackberry or e-readers such as Kindle or Nook.

Don’t have a Pierce County Library card? Get one today. You’re eligible if you live pretty much anywhere around here, or have a card from pretty much any other area system!  I hope you’ll pass this on to your teacher and homeshooler friends.

The nationally acclaimed Pierce County Library System serves more than 575,000 people throughout the county with 20 branches and online services. The system is the fourth largest in the state and is funded primarily through property taxes. We are incredibly proud to have a sponsorship agreement with PCL. If you have a chance to mention Sounds Fun Mom when you attend a library event or use a library service, we would love it!

The Cutest Thing in Tacoma: Clouded Leopard Cubs at Pt Defiance

April 26, 2016 by Keri Welch

Our favorite thing about Spring are all the baby animals that are out and about! Last Friday, Point Defiance Zoo introduced Tacoma to its brand new clouded leopard cubs, born just three weeks ago on March 30!  I know you can’t hold in your oohs and ahhs looking at these sweet ones!

Clouded Leopard Cub Triplets at Point Defiance

Now you can see them in person at the zoo! “We are thrilled that our visitors will be able to see these rare cubs and, hopefully, walk away inspired to take action to help save clouded leopards in the wild,” Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium Education Curator Karen Povey said. “These animals’ homes are slowly being swallowed by palm oil plantations.”

Clouded Leopard Cubs at Pt Defiance

The cubs will be on view daily at 10:00am and 1:30pm in the Cub Den at the Cats of the Canopy exhibit. The triplets’ feeding times will change as they grow, so be sure to check the Zoo’s Facebook page for updates.

Clouded Leopard Cub Triplets at Point Defiance

The cubs don’t yet have names! You can vote on the cubs names here!  The proposed names, inspired by Asian herbs and spices, are Cassia and Saffron for the female cubs and Basil, Coriander (“Cori”), Chili and Masala for the male cubs.

If you’ve never been to the zoo before, be sure to check out our Guide to Visiting the Point Defiance Zoo with kids! If you’ve got a preschooler, you’ll want to check out the Critter Club on Thursdays and Fridays. Get the full review here! And, if you’re looking for a FREE way to gain admission to the zoo, go on a Tacoma Resident Free Day!

Meet a Mom Around the Sound: Rachel in Tacoma

April 25, 2016 by Keri Welch

We’re thrilled to bring you our latest Mom Around The Sound present by our friends at Molen Orthodontics. The caring team at Molen loves to celebrate moms who bring smiles to their family, friends, and community.

Molen is an orthodontic provider for families in Sumner, Auburn, and Enumclaw

This month, meet Rachel, a mom of 3 who shares about her passion for kids in Uganda, her family’s rules for technology, and where she goes to shop by the pound!

Moms Around the Sound: Rachel of Holy Craft

Tell us about your family.
My name is Rachel, and I am a mama to three, Aiden (17) has one foot out the door on his way to college next year, Isabella (13) is my creative, top of the pyramid flying cheerleader, and Owen (10) my 1unicycle riding daredevil who is willing to try anything in the extreme at least once! I’ve been married to my husband Mike for 18 years.

An Interview with Rachel of Holy Craft

Tell us about yourself. What are your passions, dreams or goals?
Five years ago, our family started sponsoring a child in Africa through World Vision. In August 2014, I was able to travel to Uganda to meet our sponsored child Moses and his family. I saw first hand the work that World Vision does in other countries. Since then, I have been passionate about child sponsorship and increasing awareness of what life is like for children and families in sub Saharan Africa. Through my blog, I have been able to help find sponsors for children in nearly 100 countries in Africa. Through this platform, I am able to tell the stories of those children and families that I met in Uganda, and then later, the ones I met in Zambia on a separate trip. It’s humbling that they have entrusted me with their stories. It’s a dream of mine to live in Africa and bring hope to the hopeless. Until then, I’m thankful that I get to help others connect with children who need sponsors that give them the boost that they need to end the cycle of poverty.

What parts of parenting have been most rewarding, surprising, or challenging for you?
I have been surprised at how much I have enjoyed having teenagers! I think that most people will tell you how difficult parenting teens is. I’ve heard it said, “Little kids, little problems; big kids, big problems.”  While the choices and decisions that our big kids make affect so much more of their future, my husband and I are thankful that we have a faith that enables us to leave our worries with the Creator. That frees us up so much more to enjoy our children knowing that God already has their futures mapped out and planned.

One of the most challenging things that we have faced has been technology. We have been quite strict with technology and how we have eased into it (one of my most popular posts has been the teenage cell phone contract that we wrote when we gave our oldest son his first cell phone at 14) because there are so many unknowns. As parents we have learned that it’s far easier to loosen the reigns than it is to give our kids full access to something and then tighten things up again. This parenting thing is hard, but the word we come back to often as we parent our children is to parent with intention.

Tell us about your community. How long have you lived in the South Sound? What about your town do you love?
I grew up in Indiana but have called the South Sound my home for almost 16 years. I’m not going to lie, I don’t always love our longwinters, but the summers are fantastic! I love living near the water and being able to spend time at the beach. I enjoy being able to walk with my dog to Starbucks on a lazy weekend or drive into the city and explore the cute little shops downtown. We feel very strongly about giving back and volunteering is something we spend a lot of time doing together as a family. I am thankful for the opportunities that we have had to do that and the ways in which we have been able to get our children involved. From making pillowcases for kids with cancer, to walking for water to raise funds and awareness for clean water in Africa on Ruston way, to making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches every week for the children, men and women at Tacoma Rescue Mission, we have appreciated the opportunities to get involved in our community and with the people around us.

Tell us about your favorite South Sound things. What are the go-to spots for your family?
When my kids were little I loved taking them to the Pt. Defiance zoo or downtown to ride the trolley and going to the Farmer’s Market and Children’s Museum. My oldest son is obsessed with Memo’s Mexican food in Tacoma. He will drive out of his way with his friends for a good taco. I also love to take the kids on a “scavenger hunt” to the Goodwill Outlet off of Pine street. I wrote a few tips for the first timer. You never know what you are going to find at the Goodwill outlet, and it’s never too expensive when you pay by the pound! My daughter and I love to explore some of the shops in Tacoma like The Modern Cottage Company, Paper Luxe, Urban Xchange and Evolve Home. In the summer, we love Dash Point State Park.

Tell Us About Your Site
More than six years ago I started a blog called Holy Craft. I was already writing a family blog and updating it with our life as a family of five mostly because we had so many out of town family and friends. It slowly started to get taken over by craft projects and tutorials so I decided to start a blog that became my outlet for craft projects and it’s slowly evolved into more than that. I now write about living well on less, family, parenting, food and fitness, trash to treasure projects , and of course I still share craft and DIY projects and tutorials. There is something for everyone at Holy Craft!

April 24, 2016 by Maegen Blue

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of The Motherhood and MiMedia –

Be sure to check out the free trial and the giveaway! Woot!

Where do your memories live?

If you’re like me, I’m guessing you spend a good amount of time getting darling pictures of your kiddos that then get forgotten on your phone or computer. A couple of years ago I actually lost years of precious memories when my laptop took an unexpected, “Bath.”

You’d think that experience would have motivated me to upload my pictures to someplace else, but honestly, I’ve never found a cloud sharing platform I liked. What I’ve always wanted was one place to organize all my media that is also fun and pretty (High tech terms, right)?

Enter MiMedia, a different kind of personal cloud that is a safe and secure home for all your media.

What makes MiMedia different?

One major difference is that organizing your files is much easier. Just one click can import your pics from Facebook, Dropbox, Google+, Picasa, Flickr, and more.

MiMedia Three (One) smaller

MiMedia also allows you to have photos, videos, music and documents all in one place, and MiMedia is device-agnostic-which means you can share your memories with your family and friends even if they’re not all on the same platform or phone. We also love that MiMedia is private and secure-it has great features for sharing with the family; a perfect solution if Grandma doesn’t want to learn Instagram!

MiMedia One Smaller

Honestly, though, my favorite part has been how easy it is to use. I love how quickly I can see, find, and organize my photos. I can tag favorites and write comments to remember for future photo books, or you know-blog posts! The interface (now I sound high tech!) is much more user friendly that other sites and tools I’ve tried in the past.

MiMedia Two Smaller
