Pierce County READS! Community Events For All Ages

March 8, 2016 by Maegen Blue

Have you picked up one of the Pierce County READS titles yet?

Every year, the Pierce County Library system chooses a great book for everyone to read together and hosts an awesome series of FREE events in conjunction with the title.

This year’s featured author is Sherman Alexie.

Here’s more from our friends at PCL (Be sure to read the whole post for information on kids’ activities)!

Sherman Alexie’s portrayals of modern life as a Native American invite a wide range of reactions—laughter, sadness, anger, wonder, disbelief and consternation among them. An outspoken poet, novelist and screenwriter, Alexie is the featured author of the 9th annual Pierce County READS.

Pierce County READS encourages everyone to read the same book at the same time and then come together to talk about it. This year, instead of one book, we’re reading and discussing a spectrum of Alexie’s work with four signature events held at notable locations throughout the county and a slate of great events for all ages.

Now, much of Sherman Alexie’s works are not for young children. But, The Absolutely True Story Of A Part-Time Indian is an important and provocative young adult title  for your teen readers.  This would be a great time to read it as a family, when you have access to so many resources and a chance to meet the author. If you’re homeschooling a teen (or know someone who is), this is a great opportunity.

Sherman Alexie also has a new picture book for children coming out, and Pierce County Reads participants will get a sneak peek at it during special story times.

Read on for more about those as well as other special happenings planned for your kiddos! The puppet show is an especially great opportunity for your elementary aged kiddos who have recently studied Native American cultures. Be sure to mark your calendar and pass it on!
