Are you as excited as we are about the upcoming Marvel Universe Live show at the Tacoma Dome?
My superhero super fan has been counting down the days, so I was especially excited to get to interview The Hulk-or at least the real-life daredevil portraying him. Joshua Murillo is from Yakima, and he is the stunt captain as well as the athlete/actor behind the Hulk. Josh played baseball at Central Washington University where he earned a degree in business. He also plays seven instruments and is a competitive athlete.
Grab your kiddos and read our fun questions and answers to find out how he ended up being The Hulk! Note that I edited these for length and format.
How do you end up with a job playing The Incredible Hulk?
I actually was first interested in music and recording which lead me to Los Angeles where I was doing post production work. I met stunt performers while I was doing CrossFit and got into stunt work from there.
What’s the most challenging part of playing The Hulk?
Learning to use the stilts! Once you get used to that you can get into character and add more personality. I look for key moments to look extra menacing and powerful. It’s definitely crucial to stay in shape.
Were you a superhero fan when you were growing up?
I was! I grew up reading the comic books and playing in my backyard. The Hulk was honestly my favorite character. When my mom heard about the role she said it was perfect for me.
What’s the best part of your job?
Definitely hearing the reaction of the kids and the crowd. I think everyone can relate to the Hulk in some way.
Your role requires an incredible amount of athleticism. Are you ever scared of any of the stunt work you’re doing?
There is a ton of preparation that goes into our shows. We definitely make sure everyone is safe, and we have a lot of trust in each other.
What’s next for you after portraying The Hulk?
I definitely want to get into more TV and film stunt work. This is a dream job right now for sure.
What will surprise audiences about the show? Can you give us any insider scoop?
I can tell you it has an original story line and there is genuinely every kind of stunt you can imagine.
And, finally, since you’re from Washington, and we’re a local site….What are your favorite Puget Sound places?
I’ve been all over and the Seattle area is my favorite place. I love the pride people have in their city and how clean and green it is. I love all the sports teams and going to Safeco Field.
