Water Safety Tips From British Swim School

February 29, 2016 by Maegen Blue

We’re pleased to bring you this important post on water safety for kids from our new sponsors at the British Swim School of Seattle. Their Burien based program offers unique swim programs for infants as young as three months and older children. If you’re one of my South King County area readers be sure to check them out!

Now that you and your kids are thinking spring with the slight rise in temps, I wanted to take a minute to talk about water safety and why now might be the best time to think about enrolling your little ones in swim lessons.

It’s been proven that formal swim lessons help reduce the risk of droving by 88 percent within the one to four year old age group. By getting your child into the water in the spring, they have the time to master water survival skills by the time summer months roll around. Whether you’re planning a spring break vacation or have a pool at your home, being knowledgeable about water safety is important for kids of all ages.

BritishSwimHR-9548

To help keep our kiddos safe, British Swim School of Seattle, the pioneer of a non-traditional infant water safety program that provides gentle and fun teaching methods to children as young as three months old, provided some tips for winter water safety:

  1. Pool Supervision: Whenever there are children near a body of water, whether it’s a beach on the Spring Break vacation or an uncovered backyard pool, an adult should always have eyes on the water. British Swim School recommends assigning a Water Watcher. Not unlike a designated driver, the Water Watcher is responsible for the safety of everyone. To help with this, they recommend utilizing a Water Watchers Card that can be passed on to another person. Whoever is holding the card is in charge of having both eyes on the kids in the water at all times.
  2. Unfamiliar Territory: Visiting your relative’s homes with children can be a struggle. Not every house is kiddo friendly, so it is important to scope out what might be hazardous right away. If the home has a pool or nearby pond, make sure all gates and doors are locked to the outside and routinely check up on the little ones.
  3. Take Clothing Precautions: The only thing more terrifying for a child than falling into cold water, is falling in with their clothes on. This kind of rare sensation can send your little guys into panic mode. The best way to prepare for this kind of accident is to participate in Clothing Days with British Swim School, where children are asked to get in the water with clothes on to understand how it feels to be in water with soaked clothing.
  4. Swimming Lessons Save the Day: Enrolling in swimming lessons is a key factor when it comes to keeping your kids safe in the water. Formal swimming lessons, like the ones offered at British Swim School, can substantially reduce the risk of drowning.

BritishSwimHR-9839-2

British Swim School of Seattle is located inside Highline Athletic Club at 125 S. 156th Street in
Burien, WA. To sign up for lessons or learn more about the program, please call 425-318-7390 or email at goswimseattle@britishswimschool.com.

If you mention reading this post, British Swim School of Seattle will give you three bonus classes after signing up for two months. Must be currently enrolled at the time of use.

Also, all guests are invited to attend “Splash in the Spring” with British Swim School at Highline Athletic Club on March 19. The following will be offered:

  • Family swim from 12-1:30
  • Watch swim lessons from 9-12
  • Special promotions at the club
  • Free admission for guests all day

Hike Report: Nolte State Park

February 23, 2016 by Maegen Blue

Need a great, easy hike to do with the kids around the South Puget Sound this time of year?

Reader/writer mom Julie has a review of Nolte State Park today, a great place for a nature walk with the kids.

Last weekend’s Saturday morning dilemma: one kid wanted to go to a playground, another wanted to go for a walk.  I wanted to explore someplace new… somewhere where we could avoid a whole lot of mud and snow.  The sun was out and it was the perfect day for us to be out too.  But where to go?  After all this rain, did a trail that isn’t covered in mud or pavement exist?  Yes, it does!  Nolte State Park to the rescue!

FullSizeRender (1)

It’s no secret that Washington state parks are amazing, but we haven’t visited many day use only parks.   I’m so glad we discovered this gem, and if you haven’t been there, you should discover it too!

Once a privately owned resort property, Nolte State Park was donated to the state park system in the early 1970’s.  It is 117 acres, with the centerpiece being a relatively small lake named Deep Lake.  Adjacent to the parking lot are restrooms,  two of which were open during our visit.  Also in this area is a children’s play area, large grassy area, many picnic tables and barbeques, and water access.  True to its name, the lake IS deep, and gets deep just steps from the beach.

The walking trail was our goal for the day, and it was easy to find.  The trail makes a 1.4 mile loop around the lake.  It’s mostly flat, wide, and relatively mud free.  There are many little side trails that lead down to the lake, which make for great exploring.  There are also benches around the trail for those wanting a break.  We ended up doing two loops around the lake, one in each direction, with a playground break between the loops.  The trail is a beautiful walk through the woods, and offers many fine views of the lake.  It’s also perfect for little kiddos who are just testing out and building up their hiking legs.  We passed many people who were walking with family and/or dogs, and everyone was very friendly.

The park is located 5 miles north of Hwy 410 as you leave Enumclaw on Veazie Cumberland Rd SE.  Because it is a state park, it requires a Discover Pass ($30 annually) or a $10 day pass (there is a self service pay station open during the off season).

If you loved this post, be sure to check out our recent round-up of great rainy day hikes for still more options that will keep you (mostly) mud free!

Thanks to writer mom Julie Collins for this post!

Our Interview With The Hulk!

February 23, 2016 by Maegen Blue

Are you as excited as we are about the upcoming Marvel Universe Live show at the Tacoma Dome?

MUL_20140710_1110

My superhero super fan has been counting down the days, so I was especially excited to get to interview The Hulk-or at least the real-life daredevil portraying him. Joshua Murillo is from Yakima, and he is the stunt captain as well as the athlete/actor behind the Hulk. Josh played baseball at Central Washington University where he earned a degree in business. He also plays seven instruments and is a competitive athlete.

Murillo_Joshua_2014_jpg (1)

Grab your kiddos and read our fun questions and answers to find out how he ended up being The Hulk! Note that I edited these for length and format.

How do you end up with a job playing The Incredible Hulk?

I actually was first interested in music and recording which lead me to Los Angeles where I was doing post production work. I met stunt performers while I was doing CrossFit and got into stunt work from there.

What’s the most challenging part of playing The Hulk?

Learning to use the stilts! Once you get used to that you can get into character and add more personality. I look for key moments to look extra menacing and powerful.  It’s definitely crucial to stay in shape.

Were you a superhero fan when you were growing up?

I was! I grew up reading the comic books and playing in my backyard. The Hulk was honestly my favorite character. When my mom heard about the role she said it was perfect for me.

What’s the best part of your job?

Definitely hearing the reaction of the kids and the crowd. I think everyone can relate to the Hulk in some way.

Your role requires an incredible amount of athleticism. Are you ever scared of any of the stunt work you’re doing?

There is a ton of preparation that goes into our shows. We definitely make sure everyone is safe, and we have a lot of trust in each other.

What’s next for you after portraying The Hulk?

I definitely want to get into more TV and film stunt work.  This is a dream job right now for sure.

What will surprise audiences about the show? Can you give us any insider scoop?

I can tell you it has an original story line and there is genuinely every kind of stunt you can imagine.

And, finally, since you’re from Washington, and we’re a local site….What are your favorite Puget Sound places?

I’ve been all over and the Seattle area is my favorite place. I love the pride people have in their city and how clean and green it is.  I love all the sports teams and going to Safeco Field.

If you’d still like to get tickets to Marvel Universe Live, you can head here or go to the box office. The code we shared previously has expired, so your best deal right now is to get the 15.00 kids’ tickets with adult purchase.

If you need tips on parking and food, we have some ideas here in a post on a previous event at the Tacoma Dome.

We’ll be going to the show this week! If you go too, we’d love for you to leave a review!

To discover more about Marvel Universe LIVE!, please visit www.marveluniverselive.com or follow them via social media on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube via #MarvelUniverseLive  and  @MarvelOnTour.

Disclosure: We are provided with media tickets for purposes of review. I was not otherwise compensated. Sounds Fun Mom LLC has no relationship with this production or venue. South Sound Rainy Day Hikes & Trails with Kids

February 23, 2016 by Keri Welch

With Winter winding down and Spring on its way, we’ve rounded up some of the best area Rainy Day Hikes and Walking Trails with Kids. For those times you don’t want to venture into the mud and muck, try one of these hikes! The amazing gals from Hike It Baby are experts, and pointed the way for us toward spots that are made less muddy by pavement, gravel, or boardwalks. Let us know if you venture out to any of these!

South Sound Hikes with Kids in Tacoma

Soos Creek Trail, Kent

Soos Creek Trail with Kids

This 7 mile stretch of paved trails winds through wetlands, farmlands, and even some neighborhoods. This is a definite TRAIL, and for those kiddos who aren’t keen on “just walking”, this could prove tiresome. You might even consider bringing a long a bike or wagon for when little legs get tired. Or, bribe them with a trip to the awesome Lake Meridian playground which is AWESOME at any time of year, rain or shine.

Lake Meridian Playground

West Hylebos Wetlands Park, Federal Way

Hylebos Federal Way

In the south end of Federal Way just down the road from Costco, you’ll find this protected wetland that features a mile long boardwalk trail. You’ll spy the small parking lot just off 348th Street, which you can’t miss because of the historic cabins viewable from the road.

We love to venture here at each season of the year to see how the forest growth has changed. The pathway is part gravel, and part boardwalk. Some parts may include puddles, which you can easily avoid, unless you’ve brought your rain gear. There are a variety of paths to take and always plenty of friends to see along the way, such as slugs, birds, bunnies, and squirrels. The kids love to see old growth trees toppled over, revealing their root systems over 6 feet wide.  The moss and beautiful trees along the way make you feel as if you have been transported to the wilds of the PNW, and almost forget the I-5 traffic nearby.

There is a porta potty in the parking lot, picnic tables, and benches for resting along the way. Be forewarned: as this is a protected wetland, four legged friends are not welcome. Sadness!

Milton Interurban Trail

This trail is paved and good for walking or biking, with lengths as long as 2.8 miles.  If your kiddo can’t handle that, simply make a u-turn when you feel you’ve gone far enough for their little legs to carry them. The scenic route includes forest views as well as a peak at the East Branch of Hylebos Creek. There are also picnic tables on this trail that you access at 70th Avenue.

Chambers Bay, Tacoma

Rainy Day Walks Tacoma

While the entire country now knows of the beauty at Chambers Bay, maybe you have yet to venture here. If you’re looking for a trail with a view, this is the spot. There are 5 trails to choose from, ranging in length from 0.5 miles to 2 miles. The trails are primarily paved and easy to traverse for even the newest walkers. There are also 2 trails with more off-roading conditions for the adventurous types. The Central Meadow Loop Trail goes out to the beach and includes a pedestrian bridge with sweeping views of Puget Sound.

Chambers Bay Walking Trail

If all of that beauty isn’t enough, the kids will love to play at the Playground by the Sound.

Tacoma Nature Center Trail

Nearly 2 miles of soft surfaced trails allow for outdoor adventure not too far from the city. If your kiddo decides walking isn’t in the plan for the day, spend some time at the Discovery Pond playground.  You can also stop inside the visitor’s center to see lots of little creatures, such as turtles, fish and a bee hive. My kiddos loved trying on the wildlife costumes.

Sequalitchew Creek Trail, DuPont

Trail to beach in Dupont WA

If you live near DuPont or don’t mind driving there, this mostly paved trail is worth the trek! Park your car right at the DuPont City Hall and find the trailhead just behind it. At the end of the 1.5 mile trek (3 miles roundtrip), you are rewarded with a pebbled beach and old rail lines. Littles may not be able to handle the whole trip, so bring a jogging stroller if you have one who ends up wanting to be carried halfway through. Check out our full review of this Hike in Dupont.

Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, Olympia

Hiking with Kids in Tacoma

The Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge offers several miles of trails with 5 different trails along boardwalks ranging in length from 0.1 miles to 1.5 miles one way. Before you begin your trek, make a potty stop at the Twin Barns as there are no facilities along the trails. Each of the trails provides excellent views of the surrounding wetlands and wildlife. Staff recommend timing your walking to within 2 hours of high tide as the highest amounts of estuarine birds will be present.

Be sure to stop by the Visitor’s Center, too, where kids can grab a Junior Refuge Manager workbook and play at the Nature Explore Area.   As this is a wildlife refuge, four legged friend’s are asked to stay home. Sadness again! Daily use fee is $3/adults and free for children ages 16 and under.

Watershed Park, Olympia

Hiking within the watershed is made more adventures by steep inclines and some steps. However, many areas are traversed via boardwalk or gravel. This could be a good stop for the older kiddos who are looking to really start hiking. Parking can be found on 2500 Henderson Boulevard SE.

::

Looking to try these trails with some company? Be sure to check out Hike it Baby’s Tacoma chapter on Facebook or search their Upcoming Hikes for one near you. Hike it Baby organizes hikes around the area with like minded parents who are looking to introduce their children to the wonders of nature and opting outside. Not to mention, they have great tips on where to go and lots of friendly faces.

They also introduced Sounds Fun Mom to the beauty of the Tuffo Muddy Buddy Overalls. Worried about your kid getting all wet, muddy, and gross on the trails? Put these over their clothes and you can simply remove them when it’s time to head for home.

Playground Report: Edgeview Park in Auburn

February 22, 2016 by Maegen Blue

We’re pleased to have a playground report on a fun place to play for kids near Auburn and Sumner from reader/writer mom, Julie!

Last week’s sunny and warm (ish) weather had my kids and I running for our local playgrounds.  We spent time at one of our favorites and I wanted to share so those in the Auburn/Lake Tapps/Sumner area could join in the fun!  Located off of Evergreen Way SE in the Edgeview neighborhood of Auburn is the Edgeview park and playground.

IMG_3965

It’s not big, as it was designed to be a neighborhood park, but it’s got new equipment and is very well maintained.  The playground equipment itself is pretty tall, so probably best for the 3 and up crowd.  It has five slides of varying heights, climbing holds to get to the higher end, and two sets of monkey bars.  The park also has a basketball court, a ball field, and a grassy area for running around. There is a 15 station exercise trail across the street.

Edgeview also has another neighborhood park further down Evergreen Way with a shorter play structure that is better for smaller kids.  My kids (ages 4 & 6) seem to love them equally, and we spend a lot of time at both when the weather is nice!   It’s helpful to know that neither of the parks in Edgeview have bathroom facilities.

The Lakeland Hills community is also full of what we call “pocket parks”, little neighborhood parks tucked in here and there. Park hopping is a great way to explore the neighborhood and make new friends.

You’ll find this park at the crossroads of Evergreen Way and Kersey Way SE, down the street from Lakeland Hills Park.

Thanks to reader/writer mom Julie Collins for this review! If you know another playground we should check out, leave a comment and let us know!

Win Tickets To The Lightning Thief At The Pantages in Tacoma!

February 17, 2016 by Maegen Blue

Update-The contest is over. Congratulations to Candi, our winner! Read on for info. on this great show.

We’re so pleased to bring you another great giveaway to a family friendly theater production coming to Tacoma!

It’s a musical production of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan presented by our friends at the Broadway Center for Performing Arts. This is one of my older son’s favorite series of books. If you haven’t discovered them yet they’re especially great for your precocious readers. The hero, Percy Jackson, is the son of a mortal woman and the Greek God Poseidon.  The books are a great combination of adventure and fantasy, and they’re perfect stories for kids who love mythology and fast paced tales.

I also think many tweens and teens will relate to Percy’s feeling of not quite fitting in.

In this great production, Percy and all the characters from Camp Half-Blood will hit the stage in a live, musical experience with a family friendly run time of one hour. The show will be right in Tacoma at the gorgeous Pantages theater (honestly, I’d watch just about anything here)!

Sounds Fun Mom_Lightning Thief

It’s always so great to find a show that will truly appeal to the whole family, so we’re especially excited about this one. If you loved the books, you won’t be disappointed. If you haven’t discovered them yet, this would be a great introduction. The show is recommended for kids in grades 2-6, but I think older kids (and grown-ups!) who loved the books will enjoy it, too.

You can get more information about the show and see a short video, here at the Broadway Center website. You can also head there to purchase tickets, which start at 12.00.

And, we’ve got a family 4 pack of tickets you can enter to win! Woot!

Enter to win!

Ready?

  • For a first, required entry, check out the event on Facebook and come back and leave a comment letting us know you did so! If you’d like to be, “Interested,” in the event page or share it on your timeline, that would be great, but those actions aren’t required for entry.
  • For a second, optional entry, check out the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts on Facebook and leave a comment letting us know you did so! Again, a, “Like,” would be super appreciated, but it isn’t required for entry, and fb comments (while awesome) won’t count as entries.
