We’re super excited to announce the summer reading program from the Pierce County Library System for 2015.
Summer reading is one of our favorite fun and free things for kids around here. This year’s summer reading program runs June 20th-August 30th and features a Super Hero theme that my boys are already excited about.
As always, there will be a whole slate of awesome FREE events in conjunction with the summer reading program, and kids will be able to earn Northwest Trek or Point Defiance Zoo passes (This is one of the only ways you can get free Trek/Zoo admission) and enter to win other awesome prizes.
Oh, and all ages can also read to pay down fines-Woot!
Your kiddos’ teachers have probably been reminding you to fight summer, “Brain drain,” during the vacation months. I was excited to learn that recent studies have found that kids who participate in summer programs actually Gain skills instead of just maintaining them.
But summer reading isn’t just for kids! The library has programs for everyone from babies to adults. Here’s the scoop on each of them.
Ages 0-3: Read to Your Superbaby
- Children ages 0-3 can participate in Wee Readers to build early learning skills. Young readers can earn prizes by participating in library events and completing reading logs with their parents or caregivers.
Ages 3-12: Every Hero Has a Story
- Events, books and other materials at all libraries feature the theme Every Hero Has a Story. Discover magic super powers, explore kryptonite, create origami superheroes, meet heroes in nature, ancient Greece and Rome and in the community, and more. Reading prizes include free passes to Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium or Northwest Trek, while supplies last. Children who read 15 hours can enter a drawing to win an Amazon gift card, a gift from Pierce County Library Foundation.
Teens: Hulk Smash
- With Teen Summer Challenge: Hulk Smash, the library offers an online gamification program for ages 13 and up. Complete activities to meet challenges organized around three categories: You the Hero, Fictional Heroes and Heroes in Real Life. Pierce County Library Foundation will award an Amazon gift card to a winner randomly selected from the top point earners.
Adults: Escape the Ordinary
- New! Summer reading for adults: Escape the Ordinary. Learn something new about outdoor adventures, heroic careers, unique crafts, books and more. Fandoms Unite!
