Readers often ask me about good places for kids’ horseback riding lessons, and I’m so excited to finally have a great answer!
Keev Farm offers kids’ horseback riding lessons at their farm just outside of Olympia, convenient to Lacey and JBLM area friends looking for kids’ horseback riding, and worth the trip for those of you elsewhere in the Puget Sound, too! We’re thrilled to have them joining our sponsorship team this month.
Now, a lot of, “Horse people,” just aren’t, “People people.” Happily, the O’Brien family, the owners and operators of the farm, love horses and love working with children, too.
Traci O’Brien is the head trainer. She has over 20 years of experience riding and training horses, and she’s the mom of three young daughters herself. The word, “Keev,” is an Irish/Gaelic term for gentle, warm, and pretty, which Tim tells me reflects Tracie’s vision for the farm, her teaching style, and the horses. Her calm and patient instruction is just what you’ll want for your child’s introduction to the sport of horse riding.
Keev Farm has five school horses for lessons. Three of the horses are Shetland Ponies (Britches, Trouble, and Ellie), and two of the horses are Arabs, Billy and Belastra. They are all gentle, sweet, kid friendly horses. Tracie teaches both English and Western riding disciplines to her clients, and she can help them decide which discipline to pursue after their initial lessons.
Keev Farm is an eight acre horse farm with rolling pastures, barn/stables, and a brand new, sand riding arena (sand arenas provide the best footing for the horses, and make the riding much more enjoyable). I love the Facebook reviewer who commented that it’s a beautiful facility with, “Pampered ponies.” Tim and Tracie O’Brien live on-site, own, and operate the farm as a family business.
We love their reasonably priced lessons and flexible times.
- Lessons are $40 per hour for a 1 hour, private, 1:1 lesson with Tracie. There are multi-lesson discounts available, and Keev Farm accepts Cash, Check, Visa/MC. There is also a multi-rider discount (brothers and sisters take lessons at the same time, or friends take lessons together – up to 3 at a time). How fun would that be?
- The farm also hosts an annual Spring Break Pony Camp as well as two separate Summer Horse Camps in addition to their regularly scheduled lessons. You can see more details on those in our Summer Camp Guide, or ask about them when you schedule your first lesson.
- Keev Farm offers lessons after school, early evening (6pm to 9pm – March through Nov), during the day (homeschool children), and weekends. Love that!
- Want to get in on the fun or bond with your little equestrian? Keev Farm also offers beginning horseback riding lessons for adults, too!
