UPDATED: June 2017
Reading is one of my very favorite summer things, and my kids love summer reading programs. I’m glad they do, because there is all kinds of research (and plain old common sense) that tells us that kids who don’t keep their skills sharp while they’re out of school can actually lose some of them. They call it Summer Brain Drain.
Here is a list of summer reading at South Puget Sound retail stores. If you know of one I missed, let me know!
Chuck E Cheese
Print out a Reading RewardsCalendar from Chuck E Cheese. Read every day for two weeks straight and earn 10 free tokens. Food purchase IS required and only applicable at participating locations. I would not do this one unless you’re already fans of Chuck E Cheese or planning on going there. This program is available year round.
Barnes and Noble
Read 8 books and record them in your summer reading journal, then write down what your favorite parts of each book were and why. Once you’ve finished, bring your journal into a Barnes and Noble store between May 16 and Sept 6 2017 and choose your free reading adventure! Download the journal here.
Half Price Books
Read 15 minutes a day for a month in June and July and record it in the free, printable Reading Log. Kids who read 300 minutes earn up to $5 in “Bookworm Bucks” to spend in the store! Bring your Reading log into a store by August 31st. Teens can get in on the fun too by reading select Penguin Teen Reads and writing short reviews to earn Bookworm Bucks. Check the site for cool printables too!
Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge
This is a free, online program where kids can earn free, virtual online prizes, May 8-September 8, 2017. Kids log on to the online program, record unlock stories and earn rewards. There are also lots of reading lists, games and activities for parents to check out for their kids!
University Book Stores
If you’re Pre-k through 8th grade, you can earn free books for reading this summer. Every book read counts towards prizes and a coupons, ages Pre-K through 8th grade. Ask a staff member how to sign up in the store. There is a University Book Store in Downtown Tacoma, right next to Starbucks.::
Sylvan Reading Program
