Hey, South Tacoma, you’ve got a new playground and sprayground!
The boys and I went to check it out last week, and it’s a good one! Features include a fort-like play structure, “obstacles,” to cross, a smaller play feature for younger children, two nice slides, and several swings. It had plenty to encourage creative play, but it was also interesting to my 11 year old. It’s no easy feat to create a playspace that appeals to preschoolers And tweens, so well done, Metro Parks!
The surface is that rubber stuff, which I love, and there are new (clean!) bathrooms right between the playground and sprayground.
A few things to know before you go
- Bring your sunscreen and hats. There are benches around both the playground and sprayground, as well as tables. They’ve just planted trees, so some day there may be some shade, but for now, there isn’t a bit.
- And maybe a buddy-The playground is a good distance from the parking lot, but it is open on all sides, so if you have multiple young children, or one who is a ,”Runner,” I’d team up.
- Go earlier in the day. I do think very young children may be frustrated by some of the obstacles and climbing things. I would take them earlier in the day when you can help without being overrun by bigger ‘uns.
The sprayground looks similar to the one at Titlow. It wasn’t on when we were there, but several readers checked it out this weekend and said it was great. You can see a picture of it in action that reader Argent took in the comments on this thread over on our Facebook page.
The playground is right next to the STAR center, which has lots of classes for families and its own indoor playground and outdoor, covered ropes course. You can get memberships or a day pass. Do ask about the sliding scale for memberships-you may be able to get one for less than you think! The playground and sprayground are free.
It’s all super easy to find, right off South Tacoma way, and it’s a great addition to the area. You can see the rest of the Metro Parks Tacoma spraygrounds here. They’re all open daily now. I am working on updating the whole list for readers elsewhere in the South Sound, too! Yay, summer!
Oh, and PS-Can someone tell me about kid friendly eats in the South Tacoma area? The Chinese place my parents used to take me to is Still there, but I think there must be other options! Leave a comment if you have a good suggestion.
