It’s another in our series of Ask the Dentist posts presented by our sponsors at Just for Kids Dentistry. Today Dr.Sakai’s team addresses a reader question about dental insurance.
Q: The booklet I got on our insurance is so confusing! Do you have any tips?
A:If you weren’t already confused about dental insurance, you may be now with changes to so many insurance company websites after the Affordable Healthcare Act. Don’t feel bad if you’re confused because you’re definitely not alone!
The good news is that we are finding that the individual insurance plans are improving their web sites for easier use and understanding. They are also being better about wait time on call ins. Remember they are there for you and your family; you have a contract with them. That is why you will hear Dental and Health Care providers say, “It is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to know which benefits are covered or not covered by the insurance program in which they participate.” We are the third party, so don’t hesitate to call your provider directly to check out your coverage.
Ask questions like, “How often can my children get cleanings? What is covered for treatment? Does my plan include crowns, fillings, sealants, or spacers?” Be informed, know what is going on-it only takes a few minutes.
Remember most insurance covers cleaning and check-ups every 6 months and 1 day-some even more, so be informed! We keep track of that for you as a patient of Just for Kids Dentistry, and we’ll mail you a card 30 days before the due date. We look forward to meeting your family!
