The Weekend List: South Sound Fun for Kids and Families for September 14th-16th!

Looking for something fun to do with the kids this weekend in Tacoma, Auburn, Lakewood, Olympia, or another South Sound spot?  You’ve come to the right spot for a whole list of affordable South Sound fun for kids and families this weekend.

If you’re headed north or south, you’ll want to check out the fantastic list over at ThriftyNWmom compiled by super bargain sleuth Sia of Centsible in Seattle.

Ongoing

Act I theater presents School House Rock (Remember, “Conjunction, Junction?”) under the big tent at the Old Cannery. Family pack of tickets available for 35.00. Otherwise, adults are 15, and kids over 5 are 10.00. Various show times

ManeStage in Sumner presents Huckleberry Finn

Friday

Nature Numbers at the STAR Center in South Tacoma  Math fun with a nature theme for preschoolers 3-6. Registration and fees.

Nature Alphabet at the Center at Norpoint  10:30 Nature themed story time for preschoolers 3-6. E is for Eelgrass. Registration and fees required. **Note location; other dates are still offered at the Nature Center site.

Kids’ Night Out at the STAR Center in South Tacoma 6:00-9:30 Movies, crafts, and fun for kids 6-12. Registration and fees required. 15.00/child; discount for STAR pass holders.

Saturday

All Over

Visit your farmers market! Here’s my list of which ones are still open.

South King County

Hops and Crops at the Mary Olsen Farm in Auburn. Tour the restored farm; craft beer samples for grown-ups (extra charge for this), root beer for kids and kids’ activities. 7.00 for adults; free for kids 13 and under. My family has done this twice. It’s a low key event, but a fun time, especially if you’re into area history.

Water Weekends at HCC Mast at Redondo Every Saturday you can get up close with critters in the touch tanks and learn about sea life from 10-2 Here’s their Facebook page

Tacoma/Greater Pierce County

Community Garden Harvest Tour  Free tour of area community and neighborhood gardens. Call to see if you can still get on the bus, or pick up a map and go self-guided style. I would probably not take most kids on this, but you might have some with an interest.

Free Recess Monkey Concert at Charles Wright Academy. 10:30

Free Click! Family Movie at the Grand in Tacoma. It’s Old Yeller. Show starts at 10; doors open at 9:30. Get there early for seats. SPOILER ALERT: If you have a sensitive child, you should know that this movie has a full box of Kleenex ending. Here’s the Wikipedia entry if you somehow missed this one growing up, and you don’t want to be surprised.

Gig Harbor/Kitsap/Beyond

Harbor Hounds Annual dog walk in Gig Harbor benefits the Prison Pet Partnership and the Gig Harbor Rotary

 Wildlife Education Fair at Wild Birds Unlimited  A Hawk and other creatures will be on hand.

Saturday Story time at the Olympia Barnes and Noble  Celebration of Hispanic heritage this week

Mighty Microbes with the LOTT WET Science Center in Olympia Presentation from 2-3 with the chance to use a real microscope and learn how microbes clean wastewater. Come early to have time to see other exhibits. Free. Link opens large pdf. Best for upper elementary aged children

American Girl Book and Craft Club at the Olympia Barnes and Noble  Ongoing event for girls 8 and up
