Though we’re surrounded by water in the South Sound, what goes on beneath the surface is a mystery to most of us.
During the summer months several area groups will help kids check out the action at low tide events around the area.
In Tacoma, events will be held at Owens Beach at Pt.Defiance. Aptly titled,“Explore the Shore,” these free events will begin with a brief program on tidepool creatures, and they will be staffed by naturalists who can tell kids what they’re seeing in the sand as they explore.
Across the bridge, the Gig Harbor Group, Harbor Wild Watch, has their own low tide eventsplanned at Kopachuck and Penrose. They will also have their weekly touch tanks at the Skansie Farmer’s Market as well as some special pier into the night events in conjunction with Cinema Gig.
Further north, the Seattle Aquarium offers a similar program at King County area beaches.
In the Olympia area programs are offered at several parks by the South Sound Estuary Association.
Of course, you don’t need to go to an official event to appreciate a low tide day. Other beaches that make for good viewing on, “Tides out,” days include Titlow in Tacoma and the stretches near Redondo in Federal Way and Dash Point in Tacoma. Keep in mind that if you head to a state park, you’ll need to purchase a Discover Pass or pay the day use fees.
Do come prepared to get muddy and wet, and wear sturdy sandles and sunscreen (Let’s hope we need it)! You’ll also want to remind your kids about beach etiquitte. Rocks turned over should be replaced, and creatures and their habitats need to stay at the beach. You’re sure to have plenty of fun memories to take home instead.
