Free Weekend at State Parks, Plus Changes to the Discover WA Pass and More!

March 13, 2012 by Maegen Blue

O.K…..I get that this weather doesn’t scream, “Let’s go to the park!”

But, I’ve already written about indoor playgrounds and play spaces. Over and over and over……Seriously, it’s a great resource.

Btw, the fun gals from Sisters With Stuff left a note for me about Lil Diggers Playtime at Sandbox Sports. It’s  a unique indoor play space full of Sand! It’s in Seattle, but if you’re up that way, you may want to check it out.

Back to the parks! First, this weekend is one of several dates set aside as free admission to Washington State Parks (no Discover pass required)! Snow or no snow, mark your calendar and make some time to explore.

If you haven’t bought a Discover Pass because of the silly rule requiring you to get a separate one for each car…..good news! A bill that will allow you to move it between vehicles has passed the legislature and is headed for the Governor’s signature. I spoke to Anne Marie at the Department of Fish and Wildlife this morning, and she doesn’t know when that signing will take place. I’m trying to get more scoop for you, but in the meantime, enjoy your free days! Do note that the free entry applies only to state parks. You’ll still need the pass for other state managed lands. The parks home page has lots of choices for you to explore.

and, finally, since this post is a bit of a hodge podge of goodness, let me remind you quickly that many school districts have begun registering kindergarteners. Of special note: Registration is now open for all Tacoma Elementary schools, and the Peninsula School District will kick off registration this Saturday from 9-12 at area schools. Levy passage means that district will continue to offer 4 day, all day kindergarten.

Need something to do today? There’s quite a good list of Tuesday options at What Sounds Fun This Week, including crafts in Bonney Lake and cheap movies in Federal Way. If you’re anywhere near Port Orchard, consider heading to the Pizza Factory, where they’re donating all profits to the family of Trooper Tony. (Thanks Kitsap Macaroni Kid for this tip).
