I’m Sooo excited to tell you about expanded Pier Peer programs in our area. This is such a fun event for your young scientists, and there are several more Tacoma evenings scheduled.
If you missed my previous post (it’s almost a year old!), a Pier Peer is a special evening program where you and your kiddos can see ocean critters at night. Previous Pier Peer events have been at the Foss Waterway, but they’re now coming to the Pt.Defiance Marina, beginning at the end of this month. Kids will get to scoop up sea life attracted to the dock lights and touch ocean creatures brought up by divers.
They do ask that you not bring children younger than 8. If you have a well behaved 7 year old, I doubt anyone is going to ask for i.d….but they do want to make sure kids are old enough to understand safety rules since you’ll be over water. Also, it is a night time event.
Our 8 year old did one of these with his dad last spring and loved it. They actually didn’t see a lot of critters due to wave action, but he just loved being out at night and getting to scoop up the creatures and use a flashlight. There is also cocoa after (what’s not to like)?? You’re asked to bring your own flashlight and life jacket if you have one (they’ll provide them if you don’t). Preregistration is required. There were lots of spots when I checked. It’s 6.00 per person.
If this isn’t your area, there are also regular Pier Peer events in Olympia sponsored by People for Puget Sound. They have programs on Hood Canal as well. Harbor Wild Watch does similar programs in Gig Harbor, but you’ll have to wait until summer months. While it’s not quite the same, you can also touch sea critters for free at HCC Mast at Redondo on Saturdays. It’s a daytime event, but it’s open to all ages and once a month kids can have a live talk with a diver.
If you feel like you need more Pier Peer details, read my post on a previous event.
If you’re one of my many readers with younger ones, I’ll have more ideas for you later. Do make sure you’ve read my round-up of Father/Daughter Valentine’s Dances, and reader Heather reported her crew had good (muddy) fun exploring the Orange Gate property. Today is also the return of Toddler Time at Learning Sprout Toys. You can get info. on that in What Sounds Fun This Week.
