Tortilla Jack o Lanterns

October 3, 2011 by Maegen Blue

In honor of this sort of dreary day, I thought I’d do one of my not-at-all-famous 5 minute crafts. It’s sort of a recipe, too, except that it’s really too easy.

Since I learned about making snowflake tortillas at my son’s preschool a couple of years back, I’ve been a little obsessed with finding excuses for cutting up tortillas. I got some of those fancy artisan ones at Safeway yesterday, and they just seemed to cry out for the jack-o-lantern treatment.

You can brush on a little olive oil and make something that tastes like a pita chip, or you can brush on a little butter and cinnamon sugar and make something that tastes like a sweet pita chip. They bake up in the oven in a jiffy, so don’t get distracted. As you can see, mine got a tad brown on the bottom. The oven, obviously, is a grown-up job. I’ll let you decide about the cutting. Tortillas are thin enough that it doesn’t take a very sharp knife at all. Ours haven’t been sharpened since our wedding, so I wasn’t stressed about letting Henry help. Clean scissors work, too. Both methods are good for working on those fine motor skills.

If you do this and end up with something way cuter-which I bet you will-feel free to post your pic over at the Facebook page. Looking to get out and about? Scroll one down or click for fun ideas all around the South Sound in What Sounds Fun This Week.
