Here’s a unique, low-cost outing for older kids and grown-ups, too.
Skookum Archers in Puyallup offers a 90-minute archery lesson every Thursday evening for $5/person. Equipment is provided, and your little Robin Hood (must be at least 6 years old) will get instruction in safety, etiquette, and shooting basics. Now, obviously this can be a dangerous activity, so I wouldn’t take your child unless you are confident he/she is mature enough to absorb the safety information.
My older son does archery in the backyard with his dad on occasion. It’s one of many hobbies my husband has blown through (more on that another time). We made a one time investment in some hay bale targets, and I have to tell you it’s really impressive how focused my son is when they do this together. Getting a bull’s eye requires concentration and also a lot of critical thinking about what kind of adjustments to make. If you’re interested in giving this a try, you’ll want to check the club calendar and use the online registration tool. Do note that if your kids get interested in actually taking lessons, you’ll have to get them their own equipment.
