Headed to the Pt.Defiance area this weekend?
A quick reminder that you may want to wait until the afternoon. The Sound to Narrows race is this Saturday, and you can expect road closures and heavy traffic in the area around the course. There will be no car access to the zoo until after 10AM and 5 mile drive will be closed until at least noon. You Can still go to the ferry docks, bowl area, and boathouse (you can get 1/2 off boat rental too, as part of Free Fishing Weekend), but you should plan on packing some patience.
If you’re running the race or going to support a runner, you should know that there is No shuttle bus this year due to the bond failure. Parking in neighborhoods is also very restricted. Race organizers are encouraging you to carpool. I think your best bet is to go really early and park at Truman Middle School (see details copied straight from the race site below). Keep in mind, 5,000 runners are expected, and the school is going to try and park 1,000 cars. Yeah-that’s about 4,000 left over! Another option is to bus it by taking Route 10 from TCC to the stop by the Westgate Shopping Center. This scoop is from today’s News Tribune.
Express Bus Service
Due to the recent bond failure, Pierce Transit WILL NOT be able to provide service from the TCC Transit Center to the race. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Please carpool!
Support the Wilson Ram’s Girls Basketball team by parking at Truman Middle School (5801 N. 35th, Tacoma, just across Pearl Street near Vassault Playfield) $5.00. All proceeds benefit the Lady Rams spring/summer basketball program.
Btw, if you still want to do the race, you can register up to and including the day of the race; you’ll just pay a bit more. Kids’ registration is always free, though they don’t get t-shirts with free registration. I wouldn’t advise jumping right into this if you haven’t been training, but, hey-it looks like the weather will be nice and cool!
If you stumbled on my site looking for this info, I hope it helped, and I hope you’ll consider stopping by again. I write about family events and activities (with an eye towards frugal ones) just for the South Sound, and I have new ideas every day as well as list of activities and events every Sunday and Friday!
