Update: We have a winner! Congratulations to Stephanie W. who won with this comment over at the FB page, “We could use more ideas, my son loves being outside **Pick Me**”
Thanks to everyone who entered. If you’re interested in picking up your own copy, you might find it at the library, or I have a handy Amazon link below (this is my affiliate). Feel free to share your favorite ideas for outdoor fun any day!
My friend Barb sent me a note a couple weeks ago asking if I’d heard of a book called, “15 Minutes Outside.”
I hadn’t, but to paraphrase Jerry Maguire….You had me at 15 minutes.
Don’t get me wrong-the boys and I frequently spend most of the day outside, but I am always on the lookout for quick and easy ideas. The full title of the book is 15 Minutes Outside: 365 ways to get out of the house and connect with your kids, and the author is Rebecca Cohen, who has appeared on all kinds of national T.V. shows to talk about gardening and the outdoors. Cohen advocates getting some outside play in every single day of the year, and I was interested to see what kind of ideas she had for March, since, face it: Lately the weather hasn’t exactly been screaming, “Let’s go play!”
The nice folks at sourcebooks sent me a copy to review for you. The book is organized by months, and there is an idea for every day of the year. A few of them would require a little prior planning, but for the most part, you really could do any one of them in 15 minutes. Now, some of the ideas are really simple-take a walk, look at the clouds…..yeah, I could have thought of that! Others were new to me, though-like making a snowball votive candle or rating puddle jumps Olympic style (I mentioned this idea on the Facebook page last week). There were also lots of simple suggestions that reminded me of things I used to do all the time as a kid but have forgotten about with my boys. Is it really possible we’ve never played kick the can? I feel a little neglectful!
All in all, I thought it was a fun and thoughtful book. I wouldn’t think of it as an activity book, so much as an inspiration book-a great reminder that even on the dreariest of days there is no excuse for not getting a little fresh air in your kids.
Ready for the fun part? I’m giving my copy away! To enter, just leave a comment here or at the Facebook page-or both places for two entries! I’d love to hear about one of your favorite outdoor activities in your comment, but if you just want to say, “Pick me,” that’s fine, too. I’m going to announce the winner tonight, so check back later and good luck! I also have some other posts planned for today-assuming I can keep Tuesday from turning into Thursday, which does happen sometimes! Scroll one down for my post on leprechaun traps or check out the weekly What Sounds Fun list for some quick inspiration.
