First, a special Sounds Fun Mom thank-you to all veterans and their families.
If you’re new here, I invite you to Like me on Facebook or subscribe to my feed or reader. I blog exclusively about events and activities for families in the South Puget Sound (cuz Seattle gets enough love already), and I update daily!
I have a number of special events listed below. If you’re in a bit of a panic because you have extra kids on your hands today, you might also enjoy this post about all-ages fun I did for a previous no school day.
South Puget Sound Veterans Day Activities for Kids and Families
Freebies for All
Free Admission to National Parks, Public Lands, and Forest Service Areas. Think about taking a day trip to Mt. Rainier or the Nisqually Wildlife Refuge.
This is the last free parks admission for 2010! I had some ideas about how to make the most of it in the hiking post.
Freebies for Members of the Military
Family members get 3.00 off admission
Free museum admissions Free entry to the Tacoma Art Museum, The Washington State History Museum, and The Glass Museum for current or retired members of the military and veterans. Children and spouses of active duty personnel also receive free admission. It’s harder to get a free deal to the glass museum, so I’d see that one, if you need to pick. Watching them make the glass is truly riveting. More good news: You won’t have to pay for street parking in Tacoma on Veteran’s Day.
ThriftyNWmom has compiled a great list of restaurant and store freebies and deals both locally and nationally. I would call the one closest to you to verify participation, and do prepare for a crowd.
Veteran’s Day Observances and Ceremonies
Puyallup-Musical tribute at 7:00 PM at the Pioneer Pavillion Free
Here is a link to area Veteran’s Day observances. Note that the Auburn parade has already occured. Some of these events are on Thursday, but some are being held other days.
I would call the contact number for the event you’re considering attending first to confirm details and get a sense of how child friendly the ceremony will be.
Have your kids make cards for the veterans they love. Don’t know any personally? Take them to your nearest retirement center and ask the volunteer coordinator to give them to seniors who served.
Collect items for care packages for men and women overseas. Here is information on one local drive taking place early next month.
And Now for Something Totally Different
Pump it Up! in Tacoma has a special Veteran’s Day jump event. You can drop your 4-12 year olds off between 10:00-12:00 for jumping, pizza, and a craft (let’s hope the pizza is after the jumping)! It’s 10.00 per child and reservations are required. Children who bring a story about Veterans Day receive a special gift.
There is also a playtime at Jump! in Gig Harbor today, but owner, Andy, strongly suggests you call or check the Facebook page for availability before you go.
What not to do? Banks, Post Offices, Libraries, and Schools are all closed.
Shopping centers, museums, and other places of business are mostly open.
Don’t forget you can be part of SFM on Facebook and join a growing community of active parents in our area. Know something great I should write about? Have a topic you want me to cover? Drop me a line!
I’ll have your great, big weekend list (including Veterans ceremonies on Saturday and Sunday) up tomorrow! See you here!
